Tivo OTA network and antenna questions.

I have a Tivo Mini and a Tivo Roamio hooked through a cat cable, through a router. They work fine.

The Roamio has a hard drive that records shows. (pointing out the obvious)

The problem I am having is, I have local stations and distant OTA stations. Some are on the same RF channel. They are about 180 degrees apart. I have tried a LOT of stuff... gain some stations lose others. It is what it is. I would rather get the duplicate local stations than the distant ones.

The next idea popped up... (something about idle minds) Can I use 2 Roamio boxes hooked through the network??? Use one for recording shows on one antenna and the other records shows from another antenna? (I know I would have to set up the one pass on the correct unit.) Can you use 2 Roamios on the same network? Each recording their own shows?

Big question... Will the Mini play from both??

I don't want to do cable swapping/switching.

Yes, and yes, what you're describing isn't complicated and should be fine.
Note that the Mini will be your only possible issue since it can only pull Live TV off of its host DVR, but it can easily do recorded content from both, so some live channels will be sub-optimum on the mini.
The recorded programs, will they show up on the Mini as one group or would I switch between?

Only one DVR can be a host to the Mini? How do you know which one? Or can you switch back and forth??

Seems to leave me with even more questions. Maybe I will hunt for another Roamio.

Combining antennas has been a nightmare.

Thanks

I have a Bolt Vox 4 tuner set up with Fios set up as the host to my three minis. I have a Roamio 4 Tuner set up as OTA. Once both TiVos are registered at TiVo.com, they see each other on your network. So, I see the Roamio from the Bolt and the three Minis and I can access all of the recordings as well. Here is what it looks like.

Sounds good. I am guessing I only get one choice of OTA live. (either one box or the other) Since I can only have one host.

Ebay about the best place to find the Roamio OTAs??

Thanks for the ideas.

Well, you can use both DVR's with their own HDMI cables, so no limitation there. Only while using the Mini's, you only have one choice for the host (and its live OTA).

The last Roamio basic I got was from Ebay (about 6 months ago), for about $200 including Lifetime. It will do either OTA or cable.
Well.... I got another Roamio. I have it all setup and went to clear out all the old channels. I did a restore to default. Bad idea. I ended up with the advertising on the program guide. So I went back to load the older version. It did work, but looks like a newer version than the one that was on it. The program guide does not have advertisements but it has an odd 2 part screen. One side has the current programs. The right shows the future programs for the channel that I am on. Doable but interesting to use 2 different formats.

Thanks for the help. Not the perfect situation, since I only get locals or only distant station on the Mini. On the other hand all the stations come in great!!

The older version (TE3) comes in two flavors. Select the GUIDE options > select the yellow "A" button > select style > either "TivoLiveGuide" or "Grid Guide". See if that fixes it for you.

Thanks!! That worked.

Another question for you.... I have an LG TV. When I use the input button on the remote it brings up the input screen on the TV. Then as I hit input again it changes the input. (Good) On my Haier TV (Different Tivo remote) the input button brings up the input screen, but does not change the inputs. I tried every button and nothing will change the inputs. I tried different Haier codes. Same thing. Guessing the remote will not change the inputs. Am I missing something?
Thanks!! That worked.

All you can do (that I'm aware of) is to try every Haier code. If that won't work, you can search for every code as follows:

Search for a code to control the TV input (source) function

1. Cover the end of the TiVo remote control with your hand.
2. Hold down the TiVo and TV Input buttons simultaneously until the red (or amber) light on the remote control remains on.
3. Remove your hand from the end of the TiVo remote control.
4. Enter code 0999.
5. After you enter the code, the red (or amber) light will flash three times and then remain on.
6. Press Channel Up once every two seconds. This will test hundreds of codes, one by one. Do not go any faster than this or you may skip over a code that works.
Edit:
Remote Control Programming Reminders:

  • If you press Channel Up and your TV turns off, press Enter to select the code. Press the TV Power button to test the code. If your TV turns on, you have successfully programmed the remote
  • If you cycle through all the codes, the red LED will go off, indicating that you have tried all the codes. If this happens, or if you selected a code but the TV does not respond to the test, try again to make sure you did not skip over your code by going too fast.
  • If you can't find a code that works, your current remote may not be pre-programmed with the code for your TV. If you have a Premiere XL, TiVo HD XL, or Series3 HD DVR, you have a learning remote that can easily be "taught" to control your TV. For instructions, go to How to Use the Learning Feature of TiVo Learning Remotes.

Also, a search came up here to use 0011 Need help finding a code for a Haier TV.

I think that was one I tried. When I went through the menu it listed about 6 or 8 codes for the Haier TV. Most worked for the power button, and the input button. But I did not find one that would let me change inputs. Besides giving me the input screen.

I just reread what you posted and I thought that was for the TV power not the input. Will give that a try when I get a chance. Thanks again.

I've been doing this one step better for several years - 1 Roamio Pro (on cable), 1 Roamio on a large/distant OTA antenna for the Peoria/Bloomington market, & 2 Roamio's on a separate local OTA antenna, & 3 mini's.

So pressing the input button multiple times doesn't cycle through the inputs? If you have to arrow through them and use a select button with your TV remote then you are out of luck on the input since you can't do that with the TiVo remote.

Yep, I need the arrow keys. Hitting the input button just keeps the input menu on screen but does not change anything. Looks like I am stuck with the tv remote. Eh, Worse things in life. Thanks for confirming.

Not really stuck. Just get a universal remote that controls both your Tivo and TV. I programmed a $10 remote for a friend a few years ago that controlled 2 TVs, and AVR and 9 Tivos independently all in the same room. So it can be done quite cheaply. You can even get cheap universals that are peanut shaped like the Tivo remote. You can also probably control both with a single phone app (I know Tivo works over IP, not sure about LG).
