Hi,

I am moving to a building that does not support Xfinity and has Directv instead. One option is to get a Tivo Edge and hook it up to an OTA antenna.

I have a Tivo Bolt 3 TB which does not support an OTA antenna. In the past I’ve found Tivo Online transfers to be incredibly painful with it only transferring one or two recordings at a time and then cancelling out. I was just wondering if the Edge OTA is going to be any better or it is like a server thing?

Thanks

I'd guess he meant 'Is the issue with Online Transfers due to a lame Server?'.
Which it kinda is...
Worse, the Edge, reportedly, doesn't (yet) do ANY transfers at all...

I can't fix an EDGE problem, but troubleshooting an Online transfer issue is simple. Within 5 seconds of requesting a transfer the request will display in the receiving TiVo's TDL. It updates in real time. The transfers start as soon as the first request arrives. Then subsequent transfers are added. After that then there's no outside server needs until SM could be added to the destination programs. Yesterday I copied 10 episodes of a series from one TE3 Roamio to another (I was bored). No problems. I have found that if I copy only one program I frequently get two copies.

So just to confirm, the Edge OTA does not have the ability to have recordings transferred onto it from another TiVo by any means. Neither TiVo to Tivo transfers or through Tivo Online.

I thought it was just TiVo to Tivo transfers that were disabled by TE4/Hydra.

Thanks

I notice that there are so many bugs that we put up with in the TiVo DVRs, and they fix absolutely none of them!
Also, they send us messages on the DVR's Tivo menu, but never, ever a message telling us about ... changes, ideletions or additions to features.
I hate this company more than I ever hated a cable company!
I'm unique in that the only thing I love about TiVo is its WishLists, which give you the ultimate in Suggestions activity and gives you user-named folders to put your programs into.

From the Edge forum (EDGE - Issues we're tracking)
3. Video transfers from TiVo Online. We have identified an issue where trying to transfer large quantities of programs can fail, either due to transfer issues or capacity concerns on the destination device. For this one we have a work-around - please transfer 5-10 shows at a time vs. large bulk transfers.
4. TiVo-to-Go transfers from Edge to a PC are not working. We are still investigating what may be happening here, but TTG is not technically a supported feature so I'm not sure when/if there will be a fix for this one.
I don't have another tivo so I can't say what type of transfers work, but it would seem from #3 that yes you can do transfers, you just have to limit how many you queue up at once. And about #4 it crashes the Edge once the transfer is initiated, so you don't want to do TTG with an edge. They found the problem and have it on their list to at least stop the crash apparently. I can still see metadata, file size, etc. with kmttg but I can't transfer anything or the edge will reboot.

So basically it sounds like how it's always been. I've tried transferring large numbers of recordings TiVo to TiVo over various generations in the past and it's always had trouble and I had to do 10ish at a time to ensure it didn’t fail.

Do you have a weird issue where it seems to add items twice?

Hi,

I have a Tivo Bolt 3 TB which does not support an OTA antenna.
What about getting a 4-tuner Bolt 500GB that does both OTA and cable and swapping in a 3TB drive.

| TiVo

A 3TB drive is around $80-100. And the Edge is $400 for just the device.

Not sure if you'd feel like that much effort is worth it, but I find the flexibility useful. And if you grab one during a TiVo promotion or via eBay, the Bolt with Lifetime is going to be cheaper than an Edge without a plan.

I downgraded one of my Bolts to TE3, and just doing the transfer 1 at a time via the Tivo itself was way more reliable than the online version.

As long as the "destination" device is TE3, the TiVo to TiVo transfers seem to work.

Sidenote, the Edge can't be sidegraded to TE3. It's Hydra with TiVo+ and ads no matter what, depending on if that bothers you.
