I have been investigating TIVO for several months. I want to "cut the cord" but before I purchase hardware I need to know more about the basics of TIVO. I have decided on OTA reception. I'd like to be able to rent movies from time to time but usually I am satisfied with Network broadcasting. I like the free music channels, too but older music is becoming harder to find. I'm a Big Band fan.

Every time I see something about TIVO I read it and then I have more questions. The more I learn, the more I need to know. Comments, anyone ?

You are in the Series 3 forum in which these models are no longer supported by Tivo. I would avoid the current models (Bolt and Edge) and settle on Roamio (Series 5) which can do more than the Series 3, with Netflix, Amazon prime, youtube.

Tivo is a great OTA DVR. It's a little expensive compared to other similar offerings, but there is the great user experience that comes with Tivo. However, Tivo is just an okay streaming platform. You would be better off getting a separate device like Roku, FireTV, or AppleTV for streaming. Tivo has limited offerings and the apps aren't always the latest versions. This is going to be more of an issue going forward as the streaming services branch out and new streaming services are created. The latest apps will often be released on the standalone streaming platforms, while Tivo versions may take a while or not be released at all.

If you haven't already, hook an antenna up to your TV and see how many channels you can receive.

Some other OTA DVR that runs on a streaming device will be cheaper and give you a lot more options. So I vote TiVo never.
