TiVo HD works well with a "standard definition" TV or signal. But it can do its thing with an HD signal as well. Also records two HD (or one SD, one HD) channel at the same time
Even if I didn't have HD, I'd still consider the new Tivo HD box (or the original Series3, except for the cost). Reason being the support for digital cable without a cable box.
Tivo HD is great if you want a Tivo for digital cable and don't have an HDTV. You can even watch your HD channels on your SD set, albeit downrezzed to SD.
