This my first time posting and I hope I've picked the correct forum to post this. I receive my cable through an ethernet cord. This cord is then connected to a cable box. I have currently have a Series 2 tivo and it works great. It is connected by attaching IR blasters to the cable box. My cable company recently announced that it will be offering High Def content next month. So, we finally made the plunge and bought a nice 42 inch High Def TV along with a Tivo HD. We had a professional install everything, but he couldn't get the Tivo HD to work. He thought we may have to wait for a new cable box that will come with the High Def service. However, I contacted Tivo customer service and was informed that Tivo HD doesn't use IR blasters and requires a coax cable straight from the wall, not an ethernet cable that runs through a cable box. He advised that I return the unit and get my money back. Are there any other options?

Your HD TiVo replaces the cable box. That is why it doesn't use the IR Blasters. For all the capabilities of your full cable subscription, then you need to add 2 CableCards to your HD TiVO that your cable company installs. Without the CableCards you can still record basic channels (the same as if you didn't have a cable box at all)

Subscribe to real cable TV, or even put up an antenna.

What you have now is not cable TV at all, so is totally incompatible with the Series 3 platform. You need to retain a Series 2 to record from it, albeit in SD.

There is no consumer level means to record HD from most STBs.

Let me guess - your service is from Qwest over DSL? Tivo HD and S3 cannot use a STB as input (not component, RF, or S-video). They take only coax cable input. With this type of DSL service you will have to use the HD DVR from your cable co (if they have one) or keep using a series 2 Tivo with standard def STB. Or switch to a service provider that delivers over coax if you have a choice.

Isnt AT&T UVERSE the same way... Cat 5 to the STB?

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, there is no other cable company in our area (small town) that offers HD content. Looks like I'll have to use the cable company's DVR for now.
