I responded to a thread in the Series 3 forum about my problem with my new Tivo HD, but since it really isn't the correct forum for asking for help, I thought I'd crosspost it here.

Original thread.

Here's my post:

I was getting that kind of variation on the analog channels I was receiving before I got my cablecards installed - sounds like a possible culprit.
This is the problem I'm having right now. I just got my Tivo HD yesterday. I don't even have any CableCARDs installed, yet (Comcast's 1st available opening was the 11th - go figure). It initially seemed to work fine when I first went through set up - except changing channels seemed slow. However, I came home from work this evening, and I turned to Live TV, and I had a gray screen. I switched channels. Gray screen. I would occasionally get a "Searching for signal..." banner on the bottom, and then gray screen. I unplugged the Tivo and started over. Now, it's back to how it was yesterday, with slow changing channels.

What gives?
Any ideas/advice?

Anyone have any ideas? I turned the Tivo HD on for the first time today just a few minutes ago, and I have no signal. The Live TV screen is completely gray. I had a program that got cut off yesterday (and others that didn't record) because there was no signal. I rebooted the Tivo, and now I'm good to go.

What's wrong with my Tivo? This can't be right. I still do not have any CableCARDs installed, yet, so that's not the issue.

Sounds like it was in standby. Just hit the live TV button to turn it on again (which is what your reboot did).

I wish it was that easy, but that's not it, because it was definitely not in standby. I went from the Tivo menu to Live TV first. Once I got the gray screen in Live TV, I switched turners by hitting Live TV again to go to the other one. Gray screen. I checked my recording history. Some programs didn't record due to poor signal. That wouldn't be caused by standby. Also, if I plug my TV directly to the cable and bypass the Tivo, I have no signal problems. My old Tivo also had no signal problems on the same line.

The same thing happens to my single tuner Series 2 occasionally. I suspect that the problem may be caused by brown-outs too short and shallow to cause a reboot but just long enough to scramble the state of whatever process writes the tuner input to the disk. The tuner itself still seems to be working because, when flipping through channels with the remote, the "lost signal" message only appears for channels that are weak when the TiVo is working properly, even though all channels show a black screen.

I'm considering getting a UPS to see if this fixes the problem permanently. Has anyone else tried this?
