Hello all...I have had my Tivo HD for a bit more than a week now and I must admit to being a bit amazed at how slow the guide is. I have it set to "grid" mode instead of the way it is set up out of the box. When I navigate around the guide it just seems that it takes two seconds to move from what channel/page to another. Very slow! I've seen people reference a potential software fix (v 8.3?) in the future for Tivo HD but I just want to make sure that everyone experiences this and not just me.

TiVo's grid guide is an area that has always seemed to fall short compared to the normally lackluster competition. It could use a graphical overhaul and speed boost.

Since your box is new, try forcing a few connections to see if you download more current software. Let us know if it improves things.

Take a look at the System Information screen. What software do you have on your box?

If you have 8.1.7, the grid guide is very slow -- virtually unusable -- on that box. Tivo significantly improved grid guide performance in the new 9.1 software.

You can request the 9.1 update right here, but you may want to wait. The new 9.1 software has a few significant issues, so rather than requesting that, I would suggest you wait for next update (9.1.1?) which is expected very soon.

Yes, it is dreadfully slow and unusable in any iteration. Further, it doesn't even show what shows are scheduled to be recorded. To me, this guide is useless, yet annoying! I think it's another problematic feature or lack thereof, that has been complained about ad nauseum, and which TiVo has chosen to ignore, choosing, instead, . . . uh . . . update 9.1 which fixes stuff that ain't broke instead of doing something useful!

Growl.

Anyhoo, don't expect the grid ever to be useful the way the grid on the SA8300's grid is. Life is a series of tradeoffs, and TiVo is unsurpassed with its search options.

I do have 8.1.7 and if there are issues with 9.1 I'll probably just hold off. Just to be clear, it's not just the grid by the entire systems that's slow. Hopefully they will fix this but I've had Tivo for 7+ years and their performance has always been worse than other boxes I've used.

Addenum: Ugh...I see 9.1 is to roll out this Rhapsody service???? I have NEVER EVER used anything from Real Player because they just take over your system and you can never go back, it seems like. I will AVOID this pending confirmation that the whole system is working better with this new software. Tivo taking a play right out of Microsoft's playbook...."let's keep adding new features to a system whose basic functionality is not even usable."

The navigation between menus on my TiVo HD is not nearly as smooth as either of my Series2 boxes. I hope this changes with another update (I have 9.1).

I will probably never use Rhapsody either, but 9.1 has more features than just that. The main reason I put in a priority request for 9.1 is because the behavior during EAS alerts is much, much improved from 8.3 and earlier.

Rhapsody is a separate application, like Amazon Unbox. It doesn't have anything to do with the DVR functionality. You don't have to use it and it doesn't run at all unless you launch it.

The release of 9.1 really had nothing to do with Rhapsody. It's about setting the stage for TivoToGo, MRV, etc in November.

Um...the thing is...we don't really have any control over that, do we? If TiVo pushes 9.1 to your box...then you'll be running 9.1. :)

(Given what I'm reading...I'm not in any hurry for them to do that.)
Unfortunate as that is, yes, Tivo has the control of the software to be updated ...

Only option would be to pull the plug on the internet connection, then wait the two weeks for your program guide to read, "to be announced"...

It appears no one has an answer to these pending issues, an the Tivo peeps aren't talking either...
