So does the NPL, and every other Tivo generated menu and screen, doesn't it?
Yeah, I don't know if I'm misunderstanding the OP, but that's what I was thinking too.

It still bugs me - it's one of those things TiVo should have taken care of right away.

I couldn't agree more - it's totally annoying to me and I think it would be such an easy thing to do to just make it officially 16:9. Maybe there's more to it, but one of the things I was looking forward to was nice, crisp, 1080i Tivo menus.

Nope, it's a crazy mish mash of things designed for 16:9 and stretched 4:3 stuff.

16:9 stuff:
Backgrounds
The Tivo guy
Folder icons

4:3 stuff:
The yellow and green circle icons.
Channel logos
The guide (apparently - I haven't noticed this).

There is a definite improvement in the picture between what the Tivo puts out and setting your Tivo to 4:3 and letting your TV do the stretch. But, there's certainly room for improvement.

Nope, only the Tivo guy was redone. Folders just stretch well, as d the backgrounds.

Everything is stretched to 16x9, and has been since it's release.

No biggie though.

I'll have to look at the folders again. The backgrounds are definitely 16:9, if you count the light bulbs in the background, there are more of them.

You're right about the "no biggie" part, but what is the internet for if not pointless bickering over worthless trivia? ;)

"No biggie though."

How can you say that a distorted user interface is no biggie?

Apparently many people are not sensitive to this... but 4:3 stretched to 16:9 hits me instantly, and it literally makes me feel ill to see it, it makes me dizzy to the point where my brain tries to squash it back to the non-distorted picture, but then my eyes see the distortion and it gives me a headache.

I am embarrassed for Tivo, and other manufacturers who release new products with 4:3 stretched to 16:9 user interfaces. There really is no excuse for this.

Screw the crispness/distortion poor image quality of the menu systems. I can give a rats-arse less about it.

Instead:

1.) Get me a sub-windowed view of what's currently playing on TV like the Moto, SA, Sony DVRs all have.
2.) Continue showing the show I'm watching in Playback mode while I look at the guide.

These are two of the biggest disappoints I found with the TiVo HD

Courtney - There is a fundamental difference here... what you are asking for is a different design... and what I am asking for, is for the existing design to not be broken.

With that being said, I agree they could redesign things for the better... but what I expect is for what is already there to work properly.

Your number one has been fiercely debated here for and against. I think that it would piss off just as many folks to have it show up as would be happy to see it. #2 seems like a pretty good idea - you can use the link my my .sig to make suggestions directly to Tivo.

On topic, I think that the violent physical reaction is pretty rare, and Tivo has bigger fish to fry (like pushing out the fix for SA cablecards today). :D

Designing a UI that works well at more than one size, particularly different aspect ratios, may not be as easy as it seems at first. If the 16:9 menus weren't just stretched 4:3 menus, the 16:9 menus would for example fit a different number of characters in each column. The result may or may not actually look better.

This really bugged me at first, but oddly enough one gradually gets less irritated by it.

The funny thing is that after using the TiVoHD for a time and switching to view a Series 2, the series 2 interface for a moment seemed too narrow.

The TiVo HD can be used as a replacement for the S2 DT. The big benefit is you can record digital OTA recordings and digital cable channels. I have a TiVo HD hooked up to a non HDTV and it works flawlessly.
I've got a Tivo HD hooked up to an HDTV and I have a distorted guide and other menus ) :
