TIVO HD - Froze/Died on Netflix. Removed External Hard drive

Well, here is the story.

System: TIVO HD w/h WD 500 GB Expander on Comcast M-Card

Last night my wife was using Netflix and she pressed the TIVO Button to back out of the movie she was watching.

At this point the system went lights out. No signal coming from the TIVO. All Dark on the TV. The TIVO is attached to a receiver and it stated no signal over the HDMI Input from the TIVO. PRetty much stone cold frozen.

I went ahead and rebooted it. I saw the "Warming Up" and "Almost There" Screens" but then it went to a Grey Screen and did not show the TIVO Welcome Animation or the Main TIVO Screen.

Tried it a couple of times and it falied to work.

Eventually I decided to remove the WD External Hard Drive. TIVO Started up and stated it was missing the external hard drive. I said yes go ahead and remove it. Thankfully we had caught up on a lot of our shows so we did not loose much. TIVO Did the removal step and then rebooted. Got stuck on the reboot in the "Almost There" Screen (Go Figure).

I went ahead and unplugged it one more time and restarted it. FINALLY it rebooted correctly. I lost all my shows that where still there but it finally booted up and was working properly without the external hard drive.

So ... Has anything had a TIVO die like this? Could the External Hard DRive failing while watching Netflix be a cause or could it have been any help?

Any advice is appreciated. I am going to best buy in a couple of days to buy a new External Hard DRive.

Never used an external with either of my S1 or S2 DT units. I've had that behavior from screwed up internal TiVo drives, and I even saw the "missing external drive" screen once on a Series 2 Dual Tuner, which I'm pretty sure isn't designed to be used with external drives.

I suggest you consider picking up a new internal drive while you're at it. It may actually have had whatever the problem was that the TiVo managed to fix.

(and consider skipping the external drive and using a computer with a big hard drive running Tivo Desktop instead)

I ran kickstart 54 with the only the Internal Drive and all checks Passed. Looking more like the External just decided it was done with Life.

I bought a new 1 TB so I'll plug that in tonight. Hopefully that won't cause any issues.
