I hope to buy a Tivo HD within the next 2 months as my subscription will run out and I have a lifetime card to use. Can I upgrade the hard drive on my own with a Seagate 500gb drive? Also, looking through Best Buy's website...what is the difference between these two models (both 500 gb, Seagate's, same price too)?

I hear Seagate are pretty reliable and come with a 5 yr warranty. This sound good?. Putting in a drive shouldn't be all that difficult either, right?

Thanks!

That's a terrible price for a 500 gig drive.

If you're willing to spend $160 for 500 gigs, you may as well spend $280 for a 1tb drive. You can get the 1tb (1000gb) hitachi drives at Best Buy for $280 right now. Just buy the external they have on sale and take the drive out of the case. Then you can put the old tivo drive in the case as a bonus. (Yes, you'll be voiding the warranty on the 1tb drive as well as the warranty on the tivo.)

Or do some shopping and get a cheaper 500 gig drive. You should be able to find a 500 gig seagate for around $100 on sale.

500GB drives typically go for about $99 on sale. Newegg.com has them at that price or just a few dollars more as their regular price, depending on the brand. Outpost.com currently has a Seagate 750GB SATA drive on sale for $189.

I would NOT recommend the seagate 750GB drive. Very loud - could hear it across the room, even with the TV on. Currently swapping it for a MUCH quieter WD one....

Would assume all Seagate SATA drives are the same volume levels, as they do not support acoustic management (unless you get specifically one of their A/V drives)
