Tivo freezing

For the last 2 weeks I wake up to find my TiVo has frozen and needs to be power-cycled.

I know it's probably down to the hard disk being on it's way out, but find it strange that the problem isn't more random. I firts noticed a problem when I couldn't connect to Tivoweb and discovered that the whole /var/hack directory was missing.

Any ideas why this keeps happening each morning?

There are other reasons why your TiVo might freeze.

You don't give a lot of info about hacks etc but some hacks can cause the system to run out of memory, especially if not backgrounded properly.

The regularity could be if it is a database fault, or related to the daily call in some other way. Or if the area of the drive with the fault is related to the database or daily call.

Could also be the power supply.

I'd suggest starting by checking the logs to see if you can find out exactly when it freezes. The endpad log should do that.

Compare the times of freezing to your daily call log / cron schedule etc.

If it's not that obvious, wait for one of the smart people to come along and help.

Loss of the /var directory usually results either from a series of repeated short power cuts over a short time period (even on a healthy hard drive) or due to the hard drive being on its way out so causing the Tivo to repeatedly reboot triggering the same wipe the /var partition procedure that Tivo is programmed to implement if the Tivo keeps on rebooting.

May be downloading and indexing the data from the daily call triggers the problem due to the faulty hard drive. Obviously every morning you haven't looked at your Tivo for a large number of hours so it may appear to you that the problem takes place in the morning.
