Tivo Freezing up.....

Has anyone else having the trouble with there Tivo freezing up? It always seems to happen when I am watching live tv and hit the tivo button. Sometimes I freezes for a few minutes and sometimes a few hours. It has happened 8 times in the 2 months Ive owned this tivo. I added an upgraded hard drive to it. It seemed to start when I changed from the HD version to the SD which i use now. I did not like the HD version because it ran slow.

what else can i do besides unplugging it every time this happens. thanks

I have not seen the issue you outlined (I also use the SD menus). I seem to remember other people complaining so I do not think you are alone. Hopefully it is a bug being fixed.

You could try doing planned weekly soft restarts/reboots and see if that prevents the problem. A Premiere takes about 8 minutes to restart so you need to do it at some point where you do not want to use it for at least 8 minutes and it isn't scheduled to record anything. I reboot my TiVos now and then because it seems to clean up performance issues.

Good Luck,

+1 - a reboot every week or two seems to keep things running more smoothly. Even though I don't have hard data to back that up, it would stand to reason, I think.
what you guys say "reboot" do you mean to do the restart the Tivo box?

Yes reboot means the same as restart. It is called "Restart The TiVo Box" in the TiVo menus.

Good Luck,
Similar to your pc, restart/reboot are the same. I leave my pc's running 24/7 but weekly reboots seem to keep things running better.

It's a known issue with Premiere SDUI, see:

Only workaround to the issue that worked for me is to use the slow and crappy HDUI.

is the HDUI the non HD version of Tivo? because i am using that already. I stopped because the HD version was too slow for me

On these forums the terms HDUI & SDUI are used to mean:

HDUI = High Definition User Interface = Graphically based = New User Interface on the Premiere

SDUI = Standard Definition User Interface = text based = Old User Interface that can be used on the Premiere and is the only UI on all Series 2 & 3 TiVos.

You are using the SDUI (classic UI) and that is where this freezing problem happens unfortunately.

really? the slower SDUI version is what is making it freeze? I changed from the other/newer version to the SDUI because the screens were slow.
We have experienced the hangup when fast forwarding live tv only about 3-4 times in the past month but never had to reboot.

The length of our hangups seems to be directly related to how many times we push the fast forward button (with 30 second scan) immediately followed with a push of the play button - when the fast forward button pushes go BEYOND what is necessary to catch up with real time.

For instance this morning, pushing fast forward three times (input 90 seconds) and then the play button, when two pushes (60 seconds) would have done the job, caused the Tivo to hang up for about 28 seconds. It then resumed play.

I think this reinforces what others have said or implied. When the TiVo hangs up when fast forwarding live tv, stop pushing buttons ASAP. See if that shortens hang up time and/or negates having to reboot.

Suggestion: With the 30 second scan approach, you can "see" when you have arrived at your desired destination. Only when the TiVo has "arrived," push fast forward again or the play button.

Wonder if TiVo's 30 second scan as default, versus the 30 second jump, is their quick solution to a recognized hangup possibility.
