TiVo Forgot Its Name

1118 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  bkdtv
I noticed a few days ago that my TiVo Series 3 DVR forgot its name. When I go to "system information" it says <Name this DVR on TiVo.com>. I went to the TiVo site and decided to give it a new name to see if that would work. I've since rebooted the TiVo a couple of times and still no name. The account is in good standing and it is still downloading updates. Other than going through guided setup again (which I have my doubts about it working) is there anything else I can do before I call customer support?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have the original S3 or the new TiVo HD?

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. I have the original TiVo Series 3 HD DVR, not the TiVo HD (aka the "new one").
the same thing is happening to my series 3. i also believe it is not downloading updates to the tivo software. my current software is 8.3.1. i know there was an update released last week.

Have you had any luck in resolving the issue yet? At least I'm not the only one.
no luck, I tried renaming at tivo, that did not work. i really don't want to repeat the guided setup if i do not have too. everything else seems to work fine. i have had no problems at all with my series 3 since day one. loaded the cable cards from cablevision and it has worked since day one. my tivo software on my computer sees the tivo and its ip address, but not its name. it has a made up name that i cannot change on my desktop software either.

I don't see how it could be related, but I wonder if it's a Cablevision thing in some way. TiVo name should have nothing to do with service provider.
if it was a cablevision thing, then i don't think we would be able to download the tv listings either.
I think its a problem at the tivo server software.
There was an update released for the TiVo HD recently, but not for the original S3. The 8.3.1 update for the S3s came out about 4 months ago...

It's a known issue on the TiVo HD, and it seems orig S3 owners may be having this problem as well. See this thread:

There may be other threads, but this is the first one I came across when I did a search.
I second that, the issue is already out there and is a 'known' issue...

Maybe the 'Search' button needs to be as big and inviting as the "New Thread' button :D

Now two threads about the same thing on the main page....

The names on both HD TiVos are not there (I did have a name on the Series 3 when I first got it). I think that TiVo took the names off as it's not needed until the MRV option is activated (I hope soon).

The update last week was for the TivoHD, not the Tivo Series3. Your software is still the latest.

It's not supposed to show at this time.

Tivo made a change to its servers and DVR names are no longer available on any HDTV Tivo. This does not affect functionality in any way; is just visual display glitch on the System Information Screen.

The purpose of the name is to differentiate DVRs in your home for the purposes of remote scheduling, MRV, and TivoToGo. Remote scheduling still works fine and neither MRV nor TivoToGo is supported with the current software.
