There's a number of strategies you could use. I personally put a green dot on it to signify I've watched it, but my wife hasn't. (All my shows record with yellow dots.)
Another strategy I've heard used is to position the show at exactly the 5 minutes mark (or some other of your choosing) after you finishing watching it. So if somebody starts to watch a show, and it was at the 5 minute mark, that means the spouse already watched it, and it's ready to delete once you watch it. If it was not at the 5 minute mark, then that means the spouse hasn't watched it yet, so when you finish watching it, you need to position it at the 5 minute mark.
