Tivo is sending me an exchange unit for my S3 that died over the weekend (bad power supply, I think). I have a 750GB drive in it and will put the original drive back in.

Questions:

Do I need to call Comcast to set up an appointment to reinstall Cablecards in new unit?

Should I just use a eSata enclosure for my 750GB and attach it to the new one? I have the space to do so.

I can't get my recordings back on my 750GB and view them in my new one, right?

Thanks!

I believe that you will need to contact your cable company to re-pair the cable-cards to your new device. However, just install them yourself, since you have them, (one at a time) and have them hit them.

I personally prefer the eSata route since you don't need to crack the box and void any warantys, and you get over 1TB of total space (131 HD hours.) However, this will cause you to lose anything currently on the 750GB drive.

No, you can call them and do the required pairing over the phone.

Why not just put the 750 drive back in the new box? You will have to do a CADE anyway. That way, if you want to further expand the box, you can use eSATA.

Pretty sure there isn't a reasonable way to keep the recordings; check on the underground forum. If you use the drive in an eSATA enclosure, they will be wiped for sure.

They CAN do it over the phone if you provide all the numbers from the Tivo Cablecard screens after you plug in the cards. The problem is convincing them that they don't need to send out a technician. I talked to 2-3 people before I got someone willing to update the numbers and "hit" the cards again.

TiVo was awesome in the exchange process.

Did the expedited exchange (they send new unit first). Unit was sent UPS Next Day Air Saver. Even though unit was over 90 days old, there was no charge for the complete exchange. I just have pay return shipping of bad S3.

Took out my old Cablecards and put them in the new unit and it worked right away. Called Comcast to update the cards with no problems.

Finally, new unit was already setup with the Lifetime transfer. No need to transfer from old S3.

 to TiVo and Comcast for a smooth transition.
