I just got a message on my Roamio that the Edge for cable is on sale at $200 off original pricing which comes to $750 plus tax with All-In-Service. The offer is good until June 25th or supplies run out. Which probably means tomorrow. :tongueout:

That's still close to $800 with tax. Not even sure they are manufacturing Edge anymore, the OTA version has been sold out since Channel Master paired with Tivo to sell them for $100 off. Now Best Buy dropping them, at least Edge. Might be risky to spend $800 on a cable card dependent device at this time, at least IMO. Was hoping to see one of those $99 lifetime transfer offers. Maybe next month if they have any left after this sale. I'm getting a bit nervous about Tivo supporting their DVRs for much longer, hope I am wrong as I have a good amount of lifetime Tivos.

This year is sufficiently different from previous ones(*) such that the past may not be a good guide, but historically TiVo has had their "Summer Breeze" sale with $99 lifetime transfer during the last week (or so) of July for a few years running.

I would be very surprised if TiVo just stopped supporting their DVRs and decided to effectively brick them, and I would also expect minor bug fixes to continue, but if by support you mean substantial new features and capabilities, well, one should never purchase any device based on hopes or promises of future deliverables (since what is actually delivered may not be what you thought it would be), so if the TiVo does what you want today, I would not have a concern about TiVo support, with the expected caveat that (especially) for the cable world, some providers have telegraphed for years, and are now implementing, their moves towards the post linear QAM delivery model. However, if your timing is right, a lifetime CableCARD DVR should still have substantial percentage of its purchases price in resale to those on other cable systems (as long as you don't try to sell such a device when thousands of others are doing the same).

(*) There is, of course, Covid-19, which is impacting the staff of TiVo, and many of its existing and/or potential customers, along with the highly likely impact to the manufacturing location for the devices themselves (China if the FCC label posted during certification is still accurate). And there is the entire newly merged company and management, which may have different ideas as to how to monetize TiVo's assets.

Whats to stop Tivo from creating a DVR with a TivoStream4k incorporated into it?
That is, essentially, what the TiVo cable company boxes (can) do (the latest versions (can) run Android TV), which may support both the cable companies legacy linear QAM and their IPTV content streams and 3rd party apps that the cable company makes available (or does not restrict). However, due to the licensing rules for consumer products(*), TiVo would have to make the Android TV UI (and not the TiVo UI) as the primary interface. It should likely be noted that Android TV itself (before any restrictions that some manufacturers may choose to implement) has its own embedded DVR (part of the Live Channels app) which works with some 3rd party tuners already (although no protected path required content sources (CCI not equal copy-freely) are supported).

Alternatively, I suppose, TiVo could offer the equivalent of a HDMI switch between two different "boxes" inside the same physical box, but I am not sure that is really worth it since most TVs and A/V receivers have that capability.

(*) vs. the operator tier which is used by the cable company boxes which has far more flexibility as to what to show front and center.

OTA Edge being out of stock easily explained by Corona.
Maybe, however does not explain why they were letting Channel Master sell them for $100 off, why they showed sold out at Tivo while Channel Master was selling them, and why Best Buy is clearing them out (in fact I think Edge is gone at Best Buy completely, both versions).

Last I checked the only DVRs being sold at Tivo.com are the Bolt Vox and the cable Edge. Bolt OTA and Edge OTA show out of stock. We shall see, two BIG sales on the Vox in the past few months, no transfer needed, seems like a clearing out thing to me. I don't see anything being sold at Tivo Outlet anymore, they used to have some older version Tivos. Will monitor the site to see if anything gets restocked and watch what they do for the Summer Breeze type sale in July if they have one this year.

I don't think they are "going away", at least not yet. They are still selling lifetime boxes so need to support them somewhat, as long as they stay in business. Staying in business is a big key, will depend a lot on how the Stream works out IMO.

It's all par for the course and says nothing about Tivo's prospects.

Why would anyone place an item on sale when the inventory is short?
When people do the 30 day trial but return the TiVo, it builds up an inventory of "used" product that they sell as "reconditioned". They can't sell them as new. If you check the fine print on these sales, you'll find they aren't necessarily brand new. What you get will be "like new" but at a significant discount.
This should be a good opportunity for anyone who wants an Edge. I suspect the Summer Sale in July will be Bolts.

Good details.... But a few issues.......
1) Apparently, folks didn't like TiVo's $800 DVR and sent it back.
2) People paying $600+ for a used DVR.
3) It's on sale (sale is really the wrong term here) and not in stock.

It's just TV folks.....

They make deals ahead of time.

And if their supply chain is disrupted then stock doesn't get replenished. And thus things go out stock.
If this was Walmart, I would agree.. BUT.... TiVo can make or break deals on a minutes notice. The only advertising is email and on screen notice. Don't think advance notice is needed for a system like that....

what sale we talking about? You mentioned Channel Master before.

Are you talking the Bolt/Edge sale on TiVo.com a few weeks back?
Again something they plan in advance and could go through with even if they knew the Edge OTA was low on stock. They could have thought they would get stock but then didn't get it. It is a corona world.

For all we know corona caused a spike in demand for the Edge OTA. I noticed Amazon is selling it at about $100 above list. That is typically an indication of higher than normal demand.

Many reasons, including dumping available stock at the end of a fiscal quarter to make projections since demand previously has been lower than expected.
Dump the stock, make the goal, order new stock thus propping up at least 2 quarters.
