I just got a message on my Roamio that the Edge for cable is on sale at $200 off original pricing which comes to $750 plus tax with All-In-Service. The offer is good until June 25th or supplies run out. Which probably means tomorrow. :tongueout:
This year is sufficiently different from previous ones(*) such that the past may not be a good guide, but historically TiVo has had their "Summer Breeze" sale with $99 lifetime transfer during the last week (or so) of July for a few years running. Was hoping to see one of those $99 lifetime transfer offers. Maybe next month if they have any left after this sale.
I would be very surprised if TiVo just stopped supporting their DVRs and decided to effectively brick them, and I would also expect minor bug fixes to continue, but if by support you mean substantial new features and capabilities, well, one should never purchase any device based on hopes or promises of future deliverables (since what is actually delivered may not be what you thought it would be), so if the TiVo does what you want today, I would not have a concern about TiVo support, with the expected caveat that (especially) for the cable world, some providers have telegraphed for years, and are now implementing, their moves towards the post linear QAM delivery model. However, if your timing is right, a lifetime CableCARD DVR should still have substantial percentage of its purchases price in resale to those on other cable systems (as long as you don't try to sell such a device when thousands of others are doing the same).I'm getting a bit nervous about Tivo supporting their DVRs for much longer, hope I am wrong as I have a good amount of lifetime Tivos.
That is, essentially, what the TiVo cable company boxes (can) do (the latest versions (can) run Android TV), which may support both the cable companies legacy linear QAM and their IPTV content streams and 3rd party apps that the cable company makes available (or does not restrict). However, due to the licensing rules for consumer products(*), TiVo would have to make the Android TV UI (and not the TiVo UI) as the primary interface. It should likely be noted that Android TV itself (before any restrictions that some manufacturers may choose to implement) has its own embedded DVR (part of the Live Channels app) which works with some 3rd party tuners already (although no protected path required content sources (CCI not equal copy-freely) are supported).Whats to stop Tivo from creating a DVR with a TivoStream4k incorporated into it?
That might be good but how much more can they charge for it? They are already outrageous.Whats to stop Tivo from creating a DVR with a TivoStream4k incorporated into it?
Maybe, however does not explain why they were letting Channel Master sell them for $100 off, why they showed sold out at Tivo while Channel Master was selling them, and why Best Buy is clearing them out (in fact I think Edge is gone at Best Buy completely, both versions).OTA Edge being out of stock easily explained by Corona.
It's all par for the course and says nothing about Tivo's prospects.Maybe, however does not explain why they were letting Channel Master sell them for $100 off, why they showed sold out at Tivo while Channel Master was selling them, and why Best Buy is clearing them out (in fact I think Edge is gone at Best Buy completely, both versions).
Last I checked the only DVRs being sold at Tivo.com are the Bolt Vox and the cable Edge. Bolt OTA and Edge OTA show out of stock. We shall see, two BIG sales on the Vox in the past few months, no transfer needed, seems like a clearing out thing to me. I don't see anything being sold at Tivo Outlet anymore, they used to have some older version Tivos. Will monitor the site to see if anything gets restocked and watch what they do for the Summer Breeze type sale in July if they have one this year.
I don't think they are "going away", at least not yet. They are still selling lifetime boxes so need to support them somewhat, as long as they stay in business. Staying in business is a big key, will depend a lot on how the Stream works out IMO.
Why would anyone place an item on sale when the inventory is short?OTA Edge being out of stock easily explained by Corona.
When people do the 30 day trial but return the TiVo, it builds up an inventory of "used" product that they sell as "reconditioned". They can't sell them as new. If you check the fine print on these sales, you'll find they aren't necessarily brand new. What you get will be "like new" but at a significant discount. Why would anyone place an item on sale when the inventory is short?
Maybe it wasn't short but then a virus hit.Why would anyone place an item on sale when the inventory is short?
Don't think so... As the sale was long after the virus hit and I'm 100% sure TiVo is aware of its stock.Maybe it wasn't short but then a virus hit.
Good details.... But a few issues.......When people do the 30 day trial but return the TiVo, it builds up an inventory of "used" product that they sell as "reconditioned". They can't sell them as new. If you check the fine print on these sales, you'll find they aren't necessarily brand new. What you get will be "like new" but at a significant discount.
This should be a good opportunity for anyone who wants an Edge. I suspect the Summer Sale in July will be Bolts.
They make deals ahead of time.Don't think so... As the sale was long after the virus hit and I'm 100% sure TiVo is aware of its stock.
If this was Walmart, I would agree.. BUT.... TiVo can make or break deals on a minutes notice. The only advertising is email and on screen notice. Don't think advance notice is needed for a system like that....They make deals ahead of time.
And if their supply chain is disrupted then stock doesn't get replenished. And thus things go out stock.
what sale we talking about? You mentioned Channel Master before. If this was Walmart, I would agree.. BUT.... TiVo can make or break deals on a minutes notice. The only advertising is email and on screen notice. Don't think advance notice is needed for a system like that....
Many reasons, including dumping available stock at the end of a fiscal quarter to make projections since demand previously has been lower than expected. Why would anyone place an item on sale when the inventory is short?
