After getting frustrated with trying to get my linksys adapter to work, I broke down and bought the Tivo Adapter. Of course, it recognized it as soon as I plugged it in and was able to connect with Tivo from the DVR within minutes.

However, I am unable to get the Tivo Desktop to find the DVR. I have followed all the Tivo website recommendations (disabled firewalls, renamed DVR, re-installed Tivo Desktop . . .). I spent 45 minutes on the phone with a "specialist" at Tivo who finally said - "you should wait 24 hours after installing the adapter before it will work" which I knew was her way of saying "I don't know what is wrong with your PC."

I am able to get a "Now Playing" list by putting in "s" after xxxx\\ with my tivo ipaddress and then the username tivo and password of the MAK#, but can't do anything with it.

I appreciate any suggestions.

I just realized that your PC can't see the TiVo, but what about the other way around? Can you see your PC from the NPL of your TiVo?

Sorry for harping on the firewall thing ... I see now I was trying to solve the wrong problem. A firewall shouldn't prevent TiVo Desktop from seeing another DVR on the network.

Check the Access Control tab of the TiVo Server properties. Is your TiVo (and IP address) shown there?

No. That is where it is saying "Please wait, searching for DVRs" constantly. I also cannot see the PC from the NPL of the TiVo. I even manually put in the IP address of the PC, but it doesn't find it.

Mine shows up like so (my 240 is named TIVO 240 :))

BTW, my 540 is having no problem seeing my PC (using TivoDesktop). Just the 240 is refusing to cooperate.

TiVo.Net works with both.

Thanks Greg. When I use the Network Scanner, the IP comes up for the Tivo, but there is no Host Name.
Downloaded the free Network Scanner (the one I linked to, Protocol Analyzer, has a free 30 day trial). Not really sure how to use either all that well. :p

My Tivo Wireless adapter does show up with a host name. (It is my 540 at 192.168.1.101)

thanks. I'll have to read up a bit on TiVo.Net. I'm going to see if reloading the Tivo without and then with allowing tranfers works first.
If you want to get shows off your tivo (w/o using TivoDesktop), may look at TivoPlayList as well.

Tivo.Net is good for putting shows on your tivo.

But, obviously you should be able to use TivoDesktop if you want to. :(
