Seems that my Tivos are defaulting to a shopping network I never watch when I turn on the TV in the morning. Anyone experience this?
Thank you
I suspect this is caused by an EAS (Emergency Alert System) alert or test on your cable system.
The EAS encoder/decoder (ENDEC) at your cable company can receive the EAS data - what the alert is, what areas are affected, etc. - and generate a basic video graphic using what's called a "character generator" to accompany the audio alert message.
This video graphic and audio message are then injected onto a cable channel, replacing the normal programming usually found on that channel. I've found that cable systems will often hijack a shopping channel for this function.
Finally, one of the things that came about with digital cable was the ability to force a cable receiver like your TiVo to change channel to the channel broadcasting the EAS message. So, not only might your TiVo display the EAS alert in scrolling text across your screen, but it might also change channel to whatever channel the cable company has decided to insert the EAS audio and video from the character generator on.
