TiVo apps and question

1084 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  SQUIDWARD360
Hey guys,

I am a fios user. I currently own a fios DVD and use a boxee box for Netflix, local movie playing, and hbogo. I was thinking about dumping the boxee box and DVD and replacing with a TiVo.

Few questions.

How is Netflix on the TiVo?
Is there a hbogo app?
If I have an external hard drive can I hook it up to the TiVo and play the files?

Netflix on the TiVo is ok. I wouldn't say its the best out there, but it works. The nice thing is that its integrate with the TiVo search. So, if you search for a movie or TV show and it's available for streaming, it'll show up in the list.

No HBO to go app.

You need to use a certified hard drive for the TiVo. They're from WD and are called a DVR expander.

The Netflix app is pretty dated, but like Quake97 said, it works. You can only browse and play your Instant Queue. You can't browse the Netflix library or add things to your Instant Queue. You can use the unified search on the Premiere, though, to find things on Netflix (you just can't browse).

If you want to play video files on the Premiere, you can't just connect a hard drive to the TiVo and play the files. You need to transfer the files to the TiVo (over your network) using software like TiVo Desktop, or third-party apps like pyTivo or streambaby. What Quake97 is referring to is attaching an external drive to expand your available recording space.
I have 3 other methods of watching Netflix that I'd use before using the Tivo. Usually the audio doesn't even sync with the video.
