I am currently living on the campus of my university and simply can not get my Tivo to work over the network. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of problem with a network connection or might know how I can get around it.
Here's the problem. When Tivo attempts to connect, with any eithernet connection setting, it tells you it can not find any DHCP server. But your computer does when you plug it into the same port.
I know my school requires registration of computers and the network must be able to validate antivirus software and latest ms patches in order for your computer to be passed through the network. I went to the computer helpdesk and they opened the port to bypass this registration / system check like they do for x-box and macs.
After they did this, still no effect. Tivo could not find a DHCP server. I talked to them more and they told me Tivo is an Unsupported Device and not supported by the network. It might not be getting passed through the firewall. But opening the port from the registration / check is to the extent they will do to try to fix it. They said it should work as it's what they do for xbox's and other gaming systems.
Does anyone know what might be causing Tivo trouble getting a network connection? It's linux based right? So it shouldn't be that unsuported of a network?
