Thinking of buying 2nd premiere, advice?

1403 Views 19 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  PrimeRisk
I am considering buying a second premiere for my living room, my current premiere is in my bedroom.
How well does the mrv work?
Does it take a while to transfer HD recordings?
Can u watch them while they are being transfered?
Whats this ive been reading lately about streaming instead of transferring?
Are there any updates coming out in the future to make the tivo faster, and netflix work better and remember which episodes i've seen?
My network btw is ethernet with a linksys wrt54g old school with ddwrt custom fw.

*edit:
and how much does it cost a month extra for service for a 2nd premiere? I am buying the box from best buy.
And also, even if i am not gonna use the antenna, is it worth it to get the antenna bundle? or are there other/ bigger and better bundles right now?

Fine as long as the show isn't flagged for copy protection. Since Comcast flags just about anything HD, MRV is pretty much useless for me :(

The Elite has streaming that does not had the "don't copy" issue, and there is talk of it migrating down to the Premiere - if so, the problem will be solved.

If MRV is a big deal to you and your cable operator is liberal with the don't copy bit, the feature might as well not exist.

Depends on your network. Wired is DEFINITELY better than WiFi here.

Depends on your network. You might get wifi to work, but I wouldn't rely on it.

Streaming. It's only in the Elite - so far.

My Tivo's have never sped up. Only slowed down with each update :(

Netflix is better on just about every other device I own (Second gen Apple TV, Xbox 360, PS3). The PS3 is my favorite - I like the bluetooth remote the best of all the other devices and I also have at BT keyboard attached which makes it trivial to search. Tivo's Netflix app is slow, laggy, and quality is definitely not there.

If your internal network is all hardwired, you should be good to go. Wifi is the cause of most people's problems, whether they want to admit it or not.

$14.99 monthly under Multi-Service Discount (MSD).
Does anyone know then if charter flags everything as copy protected? I've got charter communications for my isp and cable. I thought a second tivo was like 7.99 a month. I hate paying so much for service. I would buy a premiere with lifetime but now I need a logitech harmony 900 because my 650 don't have enuf devices left when I add in a tivo.
Also I wana make sure I understand this right. If I have my current subscription of 19.99, and then get a 2nd new premiere the 2nd premiere will be 14.99 a month or both of them will be? And, I read the multi service terms and something about u can only get the discount if u have new service. Does that mean im not eligible for the discount?
First, Premiere is $19.99, additional Premieres are 14.99 each, in addition.

There is a different pricing for older models.

There is also a lifetime option, for the life of the tivo, not the user. $499.99, $399.99 for additional tivos.
netflix works great for me. to remember episodes in a series i simply rewind once im done. the ones i have seen all show "resume" and unseen do not have that option.
I also am getting a second premiere. my one has been great so far and i need another now for the bedroom. been trying to lock down a deal cheaper then 100 bucks though

As I understand it Best Buy will sell you a Premiere and that antenna for $99 (or $99.95 or $99.99, in other words a hundred bucks).

How much do they charge for the Premiere if you don't get the antenna?

If you're mostly going to be using the second Premiere to watch stuff the first one recorded in a room other than the one in which the first one is located, you could sign up for the OTA deal, never connect the second Premiere to the cable, and only pay $9.99 per month to TiVo.

Those are 2 different "antenna" TiVo deals, and, as far as I know, neither depends on getting the other.
Okay so me and the wife decided to get a 2nd2nd tivo. I got an email from tivo offering a slide remote wireless adapter and premiere for 124. I am gna get that. BUT the big deal breaker is does anyone know if charter communications flags their channels? I can transfer recordings to my pc no problem using tivo desktop. I really need to know this by the end of the day today. The deal in my email ends today. A normal premiere at best buy runs 99.99 btw so the email deal is a really good deal.
If you can transfer to pc then there not flaged.

Now that I've finally found it, consult the Copy Protection Tracking Thread

Not sure why your Google doesn't work - first link that came up - http://www.myaccount.charter.com/customers/Support.aspx?SupportArticleID=2383 ... at the bottom is a number to call for specifics in your area.

I would do it, except for the $19.99 per month subscription rate. If you can upgrade to lifetime after the one-year commitment, it might be OK.

This must vary from geography to geography. The only stuff I've seen flagged by Comcast here is some premium channel content, mostly movies.

He should be able to buy lifetime now, shouldn't he?
thank you everyone for all the advice! We ended up getting the promo deal with the slide pad remote, wireless adapter and premiere. I wasnt eligible for MSD because of the promo. BUT i wanted to give yall a little something for your help. When i was on chat with tivo support, i asked the rep about a new update to improve the HDUI, and she said that they are actually rolling it out in a couple weeks, and it is supposed to address the slow HDUI, and some netflix issues. She said it was supposed to be a major improvement. Also, she said they have no word on multi room streaming for the standard premieres yet. Enjoy the good news guys! I know im excited for 4.9!

The package-deal email I got didn't mention lifetime, so I assumed one year at $19.99 was required. If you were calling to order, you could tell them you won't purchase unless you can get lifetime. I would have liked to pick one up for the slide remote, but just hold the Premiere as a spare for the time being. I'm pretty sure that's not an option. If Best Buy had the same deal going, I might be able to buy one there and delay activation.

I just went and looked at the email (although I forgot to see if the fine print says it's a refurb) and it's a one-year, $19.99 commitment.

Which also answers my question about getting the OTA only discount.

Call TiVo, that's the best way to get a deal. When I ordered my Premieres I asked if there were any deals they could offer and they gave me the the Slide Remote for free as long as I bought Lifetime at the same time. $498 delivered do my door with lifetime.
