Thinking about getting Tivo, some questions...

Hello,

I'm thinking about getting a Tivo but have some questions before I do and would appreciate your help.

1. Would someone list the complete list of applications that come with the Tivo. Ex: Netflix, Blockbuster.

(I know the website shows some, but they don't list a weather app or anything?)

2. If I originally opt (antenna TV only) for the monthly rate can I in the future upgrade to the lifetime?

3. From reading all the reviews on Amazon, it really looks like the wireless N works smoother than the G. Thoughts?

Thanks

Vague partial answers..

#1 -- Amazon (PAY videos, not the free streaming with Prime), YouTube, lots of free podcasts (actually useful for video podcasts, though I often download with Tivo, then record realtime onto another recorder so I can watch them faster than realtime in batches)... and some others that I never use.

#2 -- Yes, but you don't get any reduction in lifetime price, unless you do it WITHIN the first month.. I think they give you an 'oops' if you realize in a week you really want lifetime. So I would say go lifetime from day 1.. though if you're really doing the $9.99/month for *years*, maybe it makes more sense to do that.

#3 -- I don't know, but I think G is actually far faster than you'll actually need.. Probably an issue if you have multiple devices trying to use wireless at the same time though.

If you are going to go wireless, spend the same or less money and get a good 4-Port Wireless N Bridge. So you can connect additional devices later if you need.

I use a D-Link DAP-1522

+1 on the DAP-1522 recommendation. If you don't want to go that way, the Tivo wireless G is a better bet than the N adapter for all but the most demanding use (and in that case, you are better off with a DAP-1522 or hard wired anyway).

If you are *SURE* that you will only be using OTA, I would consider the Antenna special rate, but if you have any doubt, go for lifetime. It will pay for itself in about 2 years and have some residual resale value, where a Premiere box without lifetime will be worth practically nothing.

I run wireless G and have no problem with transfer rates. I can start a transfer of a program from one Tivo to another and immediately start watching it without "waiting for data" pauses.

That's freaking ridiculously expensive. You can get bridges for $20-$30. (I mean *including* 4 ports.. i.e. a "wi fi router" that acts as a bridge.)

Post some examples and links. Most in your price range $20-$30, had spotty reviews and required 3rd party firmware DD-WRT or Tomato. One I specifically considered was the ASUS RT-N12.

Maybe. But you get what you pay for. The DAP-1522 is a great box that is very reliable and has excellent performance on an N network. It may be overkill for one TiVo, but I've tried a number of different options and keep coming back to the DAP-1522 if I need a dependable wireless bridge.

I previously used a pair of Airlink ones (cheapo brand from Fry's -- admittedly one died after several years). I now have two Buffalo routers.. yes, admittedly I had to get TWO of them so the bridge mode would work (since it wasn't just generic DDWRT), but even TWO of them was cheaper than your price for ONE of them.
