Wow Dexter was brutal, Simone Battle is a hottie but can't sing for crap. I agreed with the cuts for the most part. Chris Rene is a great story about getting clean and all but I didn't see it tonight. It was pretty bad IMO. However the Sinatra guy was off tonight as well and got the axe. I actually liked "Astro" this time. He annoyed the crap out of me before. Thank goodness Simon came to his senses and picked Melanie over Tiah and Simone. I'll miss Simone's hotness but they weren't in Mel's or Drew's league.

The dude who sang Forever Young was amazing.

that is all.
How is Leroy 60, I mean really..

Astro can spit. Hope he does some more old school stuff, maybe some Fresh Prince :)
My 3 category choices were all excellent (Drew, Josh, Marcus) and cruised through. But Melanie was the star of the show. The groups bore me.
I like that they are performing as professionals and not amateurs like that other show.

I agreed with everyone who got through - except maybe Intensity who were just bad.

I like Melanie but she was off-key on her high notes.

But were the Brewer Boys better?

Yeah that was a bit painful but overall she was really good and way better than Tiah and Simone.

No - I think they had a bad song - and I'm certainly no fan - but I could see them being a flash in the pan teeny bopper group like Hanson...

I agree - although I kinda like Tiah - I felt bad when she screwed up her choreography. And I love Annie Lennox but that was just a not great version of the song.
Melanie is my favorite but I don't see anyone beating Drew.
Was I the only that listened to several of those songs that started out kind of hushed and low and expected things to kick up a notch? I just didn't get all of those songs being re-worked to be completely hushed/mellowed like that. That didn't tend to enhance the experience for me, maybe because I kept expecting things to kick up.

I, too, care nothing about the groups so I don't really have any idea of what got through vs what didn't. For the others, I can't say I disagree with LA, Nicole or Simon on their picks. And Good Lord - Dexter should have really been gone long ago - I'm glad Nicole finally let go. I didn't like Leroy as much this week as I have his other stuff, but I have to agree with whomever it was that questioned how he hasn't had some kind of music career already (I'm saying that not knowing if he was a back up singer or anything like that).

And I was kind of glad to see that Steve Jones (?) wasn't afraid to push them along to make the time slot. I had recorded this on two different DVRs and had one padded by 15 minutes just in case. I had to delete that one to make room for something else before I watched it!

We are having a heck of a time getting through this episode. 2.5 hours is just too much. My wife keeps falling asleep about midway through. I am a little bit disappointed in the singing thus far though. They weren't as good as I would have hoped.

Update: Watching the rest of it now. Definitely getting better. I must have hit a bad streak. :)
I've been watching the show for a few years. The groups never seem to win but the best ones go on to sell records and shows.
Ever since Drew's first appearance on the show during tryouts, she's been my favorite.

BTW, is this the right thread to discuss which people got eliminated from the top 17, or is this just for the actual night where the 17 performed?
Yes. At least it all happened on the same show that I watched.

I liked the groups, even if Paula did screw it up and got rid of the brothers in favor of Glee, The New Class.

I also liked that not one of the acts did the imitation performances you usually see on AI. Someone actually went in and rearranged every song and did a medley too. Definitely shows how much influence the judges/coaches have.
My greatest dissatisfaction was with the other female judge (not Paula). The very first girl she picked to move forward was imo, the worst of the four girls, and was also the same girl Simon smacked down with his critiques. The mentor judge highly objected to Simon's comments, and got emotional about it, which makes me wonder if she picked her to go through just to make Simon mad - if so, that's pretty lousy.

Also, isn't this show supposed to be Simon's show? He's given an awful lot of power to the other three judges on who goes forward.

I'm glad that America is not voting yet (and maybe they'll never get to vote at all? - I don't know how this all works.) I trust the judges' opinions more than I trust America's.

Overall, I agree with Simon's opinions more than the other judges, as I always have, but with this exception: as a whole, his girls seemed to be of subpar talent (notable exception is of course drew), even though he was totally bragging about how good they were. I'm wonder if since he trained them, his opinions have gotten biased. But as far as his critiques of the other 12 contestants (the ones mentored by the other three judges), as a whole I agree with his critiques, more than I agree with the other 3 judges' critiques.
