In order to keep spoilers out of the general thread for The Rookie, I figured I'd start a new one.

My thoughts -

I think the writers were planning on doing more with the first episode, but because of the issues with the actress who played Talia, they had to punt and rewrite it. I'm guessing they threw the DHS/girlfriend into those scenes with Nolan instead.

As someone said in the other page, I think there is something hinky with the girlfriend. Her behavior is making Nolan suspicious. I wonder if she's trying to get closer to him (I think I fell in love with you a little) to make sure she knows what he knows and to control him a little bit.

I think Bradford was supposed to be sicker, longer, but with the change in writing required by having to remove Bishop from the lineup, they needed to punt a little bit.

I did have to laugh at Chen getting a face full of powder after keying her radio next to the trash can. :D And that, btw, is totally true. Some things are sensitive to radio keying (called HERO sensitive).

Even with the possible punting/rewriting, I enjoyed it a lot.

I did like Nathan’s Galaxy’s Edge t shirt but the Disney cross promotion got a little heavy handed.

Copying our relevant posts from the old Rookie* thread:
Just watched the season premier. They sure wrote Afton Williamson / Officer Bishop out quickly. Just a few well-placed sentences explaining her absense, and we're off-and-running.

Due to a recording problem here I never saw the previous season finale and cliffhanger, so I had no idea what was going on at first. But, apparently I needn't have worried.

They appear to have chopped up what they'd originally filmed for the season opener to quickly conclude that situation and avoid using anything new with Williamson in it. Then they moved on to an entirely new story. Kinda sad.
I found it fine, but still lacking something. :(
Enjoyed it,
That DHS woman is bad news.
So what read the matter with Tim? He collapses at the end of last season, rushed to hospital, guess into aniphylaptic shock, then sittings up to save the day a few seconds later?

Very sloppy writing. Or re-writing.
He had a reaction to something they gave him. Once you get the epi you recover pretty fast, right?
*"Old Rookie". Yes, I noticed that. ;-)

Dammit, I didn't set a season pass on the new OTA Tivo. Time to use that new Hulu subscription, I guess.

Do I need to go back and watch the end of last season to remember what the hell was happening? Or do they show all that stuff at the beginning of 2-1?

They gave a really fast recap and I found it confusing, but as I mentioned above that didn't matter much.

Talia's absence during the cold open was very apparent. The camera angles to only show Nolan but not the passenger seat were really obvious. (I'm not sure if the contract would have permitted it, but I wonder if they could have used a body double, and shot some views from the back seat. I'm not sure if that would have helped or made it even more glaring.)

They explained her absence away, but I'm not sure that the "two weeks" was a realistic window of time for her to suddenly transfer to the ATF. I know, the show was in a no-win position... if they had made it much more than two weeks, it would have thrown off the rest of the storytelling on the show.

Speaking of the two week gap... that two weeks didn't seem nearly enough for Nolan to have suddenly decided to move out of his friends place, find a place of his own, buy it, and begin construction. Again, I'm sure that decision was driven by something else on the show (unclear what that might be), but it seemed really sudden for that to happen.

I disagree; two weeks wouldn't get the preliminary investigation for the ATF done. I'm very sure that's not a realistic window.

Maybe she had started the process earlier and just didn't tell us.

On the one hand, it had been discussed on-screen at the end of last season. On the other, an standard escrow in California lasts 30 days; I would not believe Nolan would take a short escrow. His character as portrayed is not an idiot.

I don't think it is unrealistic that he's been looking for his own place for a while. Just because they didn't show the process doesn't mean that it hadn't happened. Keep in mind that he's been living with a friend and that he realized it was too much and started paying rent. He also realized that the rent wasn't enough for the value, so it seems realistic that he was looking for a place for a while.

Doing something with his hands (construction, demolition) during the downtime after the shooting makes sense. He didn't handle the previous one well (slept with the ex).

I just decided to ignore the two weeks thing, and then all the changes made more sense. The "willful suspension of disbelief" is a wonderful tool for a network television watcher. :)

What, you mean that the show isn't true-to-life generally? ;)
Oh no, it could definitely happen. A 48 year-old Captain Tight Pants Castle as a 41 year-old rookie sleeping with a 31 year-old Portia Lin playing a 20-something rookie makes perfect sense to me. Because the Android says they're half-plus-seven IRL. Or something.

Now I'm going to need to (surreptitiously) check out his pants--I never noticed them as being tight. ;) Not terribly practical for a cop on a beat.
