Hooray! I think The Office is my favorite sitcom on TV right now, so this makes me bouncyhappy!
I'd like to quibble with your characterization. I watched this for the first time last night and did not like it. But it certainly was not because I didn't "get" it. The star plays an idiot, the kind of guy who is so offputting that we can't stand looking at him, let alone actively seeking him out. We all know the type, and because we don't like them, we don't hang out with them. It's uncomfortable.Lee L said:IT is one of those things that you either love or just don't get.
That is the whole point of the show. The guy is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable.efilippi said:I'd like to quibble with your characterization. And that, for me, is the show's problem: It puts me in that uncomfortable place. Kind of like I felt during that recent Lisa Kudrow thing on HBO.
Or maybe I'm just an old fart.![]()
And forgive me, but feeling uncomfortable is not my idea of fun. To each his own, of course.Lee L said:That is the whole point of the show. The guy is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable.
I think the poster meant "just don't get.. (why it's funny.)" I don't think it was a swipe at people that don't like the show not being intelligent enough to understand it. For example, I don't get Country Music. I get what's going on, but for me, I don't think it's nice to listen to.efilippi said:I'd like to quibble with your characterization. The uncomfortable humor is the whole premise of the show. I'd consider this a sub-genre of comedy. Woody Allen was a pioneer of this type of comedy. More recently we have comedians like Jon Stewart and Ricky Gervais. If it's not your cup of tea, then yes this show is not for you.efilippi said:And forgive me, but feeling uncomfortable is not my idea of fun. To each his own, of course.
Add Curb Your Enthusiasm (Larry David) to that list too.DLiquid said:The uncomfortable humor is the whole premise of the show. I'd consider this a sub-genre of comedy.
