The Next Iron Chef, Ep 1 10/7/08

Anybody else watching this show?

I liked it! Sure, it's pretty much exactly the same as Top Chef and The Next Food Network Star, but I love that stuff.

I thought the challenges were pretty good. The first one seemed like a straight-up test of basic cooking skills, and the second one was very interesting in a different way.

Looks like there will only be four episodes, though, which is too bad. I'd probably be happy to watch more.

My TiVo will pick it up soon, I think. Can't recall which airing it will grab with all of the other conflicts I have on Sunday night.

I'm rooting for Michael Symon from Cleveland and Chris Cosentino from San Francisco. Also, looking forwardto Ruhlman as a judge. It will be like watching "Cooking Under Fire" (a show on PBS a few years ago)
Liked the first episode. Just finished watching..

Standard reality show build up drama for the reveals and such. Kinda lame, but that's the formula for these shows..

Freaky desserts as a challenge. Not bad, really, as the Iron Chef show has been known for that sort of thing.
Was it fair that they put them in a overheated kitchen with equipment not able to work properly? It's one thing to ask people to improvise, but it is another thing to have a freezer that doesn't work.

Yeah, it seemed to me like a do-over was in order. Those were terrible conditions. The only good thing is that they all had to deal with them.
Better than the Next Food Network Star, but not near as good as Top Chef, IMO.

The cheesy Chairman makes me cringe and chuckle at the same time.
I was a little suprised at the conditions in the kitchen at the CIA. Can't imagine that it was PLANNED that way for the contestants.
I think it was Besh (can't remember his first name) that was sweating so bad I don't know how he was avoiding it getting into the dish he was preparing.
Oh.. Read Michael Ruhlman's blog (he's one of the judges)

Some good insight there, including a comment on one reason why it was so hot.
I enjoy watching Iron Chef America, and so I had really been looking forward to this. It was pretty much exactly what I anticipated it would be. Good show - I'm sorry to hear it is only on for a limited run. I assume, though I don't think they said outright, that the winner will be in regular rotation with the other iron chefs on ICA? That would make sense, since it seems to be the whole premise of the show, but it was a bit strange it was never explicitly said.

Not sure what exactly will happen. They will go into rotation with the others, but it's not clear if the winner will be an additional Iron Chef or if they will be replacing one of the current Iron Chefs.
