I'm looking to work out a long term upgrade plan, that benefits all in this scenario. My sisters and my parents TiVos are all hand me downs from me. So, if I want to do switching, they're all agreeable.

My House
1 S2 Dual-Tuner w/ 3 year commitment
1 S2 Non-Dual-Tuner w/ lifetime

Sister's House
1 S2 Non-Dual-Tuner w/ 3 year commitment
1 S1 w/ lifetime

Parent's Vacation Home
1 S1 w/ lifetime

I don't think either of the S1s are grandfathered, but I'm not sure about the one at the Vacation home.

Should TiVo offer lifetime transfers (please...) I would buy new S3/HD boxes for my home transfer service off the 2 S1s, keep my Dual Tuner S2, give my S2/lifetime to my sister and pay for month-to-month service on my parents S1, since they're at their vacation home like, 2-3 months a year.

Would something like that work? I mean, theoretically, of course.

There is no month-to-month service without commitment anymore, so I'd leave the parent's DVR alone, or lend them a monthly subbed one for the summer.

Not even the (ridiculously overpriced) $19.95 a month? Gah!

If I loan them one of the monthly subbed ones, it would be dialing in from another service address, isn't this against TiVo law?
Not if you tell them that you need to pay full price instead of the MSD rate because it's at a different location than the qualifying Tivo.

or

Not if the subscription is in your parents name on their own account and thus paying full price anyway.

It just doesn't seem to pay. I would paying for a whole year of service for keeping the thing in use for 2-3 months.

Maybe I'll get them the Adelphia DVR for the time they're down there. They'll hate life without the tivo interface, but the alternative doesn't seem to be worth it.

As I said, just lend one of the DVRs you or your sister have to them for the summer (assuming that is when they use it). Or you could use The Series 1 manually without sub, or try and find them a Toshiba or Pioneer TiVo.

As classicsat has said, why not keep the "Summer House" DVR on your Account and lend it to them when they are at the Summer House?

There is nothing that says you cannot do this in any "Tivo" law.

I would want to upgrade the Summer House DVR, if an upgrade deal came down the pike. I wouldn't want to keep any S1s in the family that could go belly-up at any time, when I could upgrade them and keep their subs 'alive' for a few years longer.
