This article mentions among other things that Sony plans on releasing a digital tuner for the PS3 next year allowing it to possibly record HD TV programs. It's linked to a broadcast service launch in New Zealand.

That's great...so my PS3 20Gb will get a whopping 2.3 hours of recording time! Or I can upgrade to the new PS3 80Gb with 9.0 hours recording time.

A tuner product makes more sense in many European markets 1) where most of the population uses OTA for TV, and 2) which don't yet have OTA HDTV and won't anytime soon.
Can't you use external drives with the PS3? I don't have one but I thought that was the case...
yet more reasons why Sony is not selling many PS3.
New Zealand
9,019 PS3 sold
450,000 ps2 sold.
not exactly a big buy in.

now a OTA tuner specific to New Zealand broadcaster. Many questions unanswered as well - can you record while playing a game? Is a 1000$ (in New Zealand) OTA HD tuner all that exciting?

I just don't get what Sony is thinking here

What are Tivo and the cable companies in NZ doing in this regard? Maybe there's a market. Does NZ even use ATSC?

here is an article on that

TiVo signed a deal withy Seven Media group which is based in Australia but serves New Zealand as well. No idea in what numbers.

The Box TiVo will design could be used in Europe as well from what I initially read about it.
No, NZ does not use ATSC - most of the world does NOT use ATSC.

Most of the world uses DVB-T, including NZ. As ZeoTiVo pointed out, the hardware being developed for Australia (I bet it is based on the TiVo HD platform) will be usable in most of the world because of the common DVB spec.

Sony may develop a tuner for the PS3, but if it is sold in NZ then it will be DVB as well - and won't work in the US. To work in the US they'd really need a CableCARD tuner, and it remains to be seen if they'd bother with that.

It is much simpler to build receivers in the rest of the world, the US is kind of a pain in the ass to support. We're the only country that uses CableCARD - but we're also a big market.

It really is a pain how the US so often chooses to go its own way rather than working wth the rest of the world on common standards. I seem to remember that there were some strong agruements against deploying ATSC here, but the "standard" was pushed out anyway.
There are really dumb rumors floating around now saying that since Sony is a TiVo licensee that the PS3 DVR might run TiVo software and be S3 comparable. Can you imagine CableLabs certifying the PS3? Neither can I.

Actually yes, I can. Quite readily. They've certified PCs, which are *FAR* more open than the PS3. I could see Sony developing an OCUR for the PS3 to support CableCARD without any problems. I just don't know that it is economically viable to do so. The process isn't cheap, and it is a limited market - only the US. And only PS3 owners who also what to use them as DVRs. (I might pick one up just to play with it, depending on the price - I have a PS3 for Blu-ray and a little gaming.)

But running TiVo software? No. Sony was, and I think still is, a TiVo licensee. But they haven't used the TiVo software since the SVR-3000. Sony has licensed TiVo's patents to use in their own DVR software - they sell DVRs in Japan, some of them have had a small TiVo logo on the back indicating TiVo technology is used in the product. But they don't run 'TiVo software'.

Sony also has DVR software for PCs that they have bundled with some of their Vaio machines. Most likely Sony would use their own code base to develop PS3 DVR software.

The PS3 hard drive is user upgradable. You can install any HD size that you want. The PS3 user manual includes upgrade instructions.

Yes.
It seems to me Sony would be looking towards creating a IPTV solution and not a DVR. I am not buying any of the DVR ideas because the PS3 is a global product. And implementing a DVR in a global product like this would be a nightmare because of the different standards.

I agree. I have a PS3 and I would use it for IPTV or HD movie downloads. I would not use it as a DVR. That is what my S3 is for.
