The reaction of the girl to the Tiananmen Square tank man photo wasn't that surprising. In http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/tankman/, there was a similar reaction by Chinese college students at the time. Some didn't know or claimed not to know while others sort of whispered it, IIRC. Frontline showed that the Chinese media hardly mentioned the incident. Their propaganda was that that it showed the restraint of the Chinese military.
