Terra Nova 11/21/2011 S01E09: "Vs"

So we finally get a glimpse of the main story arc. And we are given an idea on who the bad guys are (I know it's not that simple). But I really want to mention something that really bothers me about this show so far (and maybe I'm sensitive to this topic).

So we have this "utopia" on Earth. The chance to start new and do things right. And what form of government do they have?

- A dictator who rules over ALL. With the military to back him up.
- He is both judge and jury.
- He has no problem with torture.
- He has no problem killing those who oppose his views.
- He either bribes, intimidates, or both to cover up his actions.
- He has no problem planting evidence against innocent people who might expose him*.
- He is appointed for life, it seems. There is no voting. People should do their job and just be happy.
- He speaks to the masses as the father figure who is tough but with a kind heart (every press secretary of a dictator's wet dream, basically).

That sounds awesome, doesn't it? Utopia my butt.

* How did he know what evidence to plant BEFORE the scientist told him about the frequency and that he fixed the dragonfly? Is it continuity error or did he already know all these facts and is "in" on the conspiracy?

My scientific gripe for this episode:

32.8 Hz is subsonic? In a pig's eye. That's a nice deep bass frequency everyone can hear unless you're deaf. And then you'd still be able to feel it.

Yes, this bugs me too. No elections? Military rule? Maybe there's an explanation for it that we haven't heard yet. But in the meantime it's really weird.

Taylor told the doc that they would release the dragonfly when everyone was at the festival. This implies there was some passage of time between formulating the plan and the actual release. Plenty of time for Taylor to set up a transmitter in the Shannon home.
It looks like I'm on the sixers' side here. Taylor and his crew appear to be willing to let the Earth they came from -- with however many billions alive there -- be destroyed because they are too selfish to allow resources from the past be used to save it.

They gave the impression that the plan wasn't to just use some resources, but come and strip mine the planet. Given that the future Earth also had pollution issues, it's not hard to imagine that they'd also pump waste back.

The equally egregious issue with that is that's not how it's presented to the future world. They're being told the new place is being setup from scratch, intended to be cleaner, a new beginning. Instead the powers that be are working hard to exploit the place to keep things going as-is on Earth. Most likely the gate keepers will reap the rewards to be had for bringing things through the portal ( in either direction ).

The people who are there creating a settlement were told they were doing it to create a new colony, not to lay the groundwork for the biggest mine ever.
And presumably the plan (or at least the public plan) is to send more and more people back as the settlement is able to handle them...

So they can go for a fresh start in the past, or they can strip-mine the past to prolong the problems in the future.

This.

Also, how creepy is it that the kids are doing hero-worship plays about Taylor while he's still alive and in power?

Nice to finally know what's going on, anyway. I didn't expect it to come out all at once like that.

Yes children. We must praise the dear leader!

The other thing Taylor made a big point of was some of the 2149 people wanted to "line their pockets" with profits. Damn that capitalism.

They're not praising the leader! They're praising the origins of the colony!

(Which just happens to involve a leader who's still alive, but I'm sure that's entirely coincidental.)
How long has Terra Nova been there, six years?
I hope the conflict isn't as simple as what he have been told so far. I assume there are going to be a lot more layers to the story than that.

I figured the military rule was supposed to be temporary until the colony was established, though that's just my interpretation.
And the colony is quite young...absurdly so, in light of how developed it is.
Earth First! then we will strip mine the other planets. :)

Considering they are only doing 13 shows this season and next year is a big maybe, I don't think they are going to have the time to be too layered.

True. I guess I should amend my post to say that I hope that was their plan!
So if the "bad guys" strip mine and pillage the earth in an alternate time line, does it affect the other earth's resources in the other time line?
It could be that Taylor is in charge of security matters, and there's an unseen body in charge of the rest.
