The Pioneer DVR-810H and Toshiba RS-TX20 both use the same InstantCake to create drives. I'm wondering if a drive from a DVR-810H will work in a RS-TX20, assuming I do a clear and delete. Anyone know?

Nope, that shouldn't work. The first three digits of the TSN needs to match to be able to swap hard drives. But you could try it and verify that it doesn't work. :)

Just to confuse things, I was able to use the disc image of a Toshiba TX20 in a Humax DRT800. But the hard ware is virtually identical. The hardware for the Pioneer TiVos is much different than the hardware for the Toshiba TiVos and the Humax TiVos.

Just curious, why would you want to do this?

Well, I have an 80gb drive that I created with the InstantCake disk for my DVR-810H. Later on I upgraded it to a 250gb drive. I am expecting to receive a Toshiba RX-TX20 later this week (from eBay) and I won't have immediate access to my PC that I use to write TiVo images. I thought that since the InstantCake disc was the same for all of these units that the 80gb drive may just work in the Toshiba. All I need to do is find out if the thing has lifetime plus, which will be the difference between upgrading and cleaning versus tossing it in my TiVo pile o' junk.

You were right. The drive from the Pioneer does not boot the Toshiba. I thought the InstantCake disk was the same, but it is not.

Anyway, the RS-TX20 is working now. It has never been activated, so I'll probably just stick a nice big drive in it and resell it on eBay. I like the Pioneer boxes better.
