Supposed issues with 8.3

So, I wanted to watch WSOP 2007, and switched to my Tivo and O had a grey screen. Menus were VERY slow. When I finally saw an actual picture, it was broken up. The previous WOSP 2007 show was truncated.

After reboots and such, no improvement.

In the meantime I had called Tivo support. They said it's a software issue.

So I have some questions...

When did 8.3 come out?

Did other people have issues with 8.3? Only some people?

9.1 is supposed to fix this? But some people are complaining about 9.1 issues?

Apparently I can't FORCE an update? I have to wait for Tivo to allow me to update? I am apparently on a priority queue.

I am a little confused by all of this, never having seen a software push gone wrong before.

Any info you could give me is appreciated.

FYI, disconnected the cable returned menu response to normal, so at least I can navigate menus. Of course I can't record any shows at the moment :)

I don't know what a WSOP is, so can't help you there. I don't know what a "O" is, so can't help you there.

Since you mentioned 8.3 I assume you have the TiVo S3. Is this a new unit that won't work, or is it one you've had a while and now doesn't work? Is the problem only with WSOPs or other programs also?

8.3 has been out quite awhile (six months?). 9.1 is being rolled out now. Did you put yourself on the Priority List, or did someone just tell you that you were on it. Either way, you can still force a connection and check for the Pending Restart message. Most people report that they got the update within 48 hours of signing up to the priority list.

Your problem really doesn't sound like a software issue, but more of a cablecard or signal strength issue.
Here is my reply to a similar problem...TiVo slows/stops but improves when the cable/coax is disconnected. Unfortunately I don't have a fix but you can take some comfort in knowing that you're not alone.

It's a signal problem of some nature, but not associated with v8.3x or the newer v9.1x as it's been around a while. v8.3 started rolling out in April. This latest version should download to your TiVo within 24 to 36 hours if you're on the Priority List.
WSOP is the World Series of Poker on ESPN and ESPN2.

The good news is that it will be on several more times this week and in the weeks to come, since ESPN loves to repeat their own programming. This weeks new episodes are the final 2 episodes of the 2007 WSOP main event.

I don't know if you have the option of recording it from an analog version of ESPN or ESPN2, but if you do, you might want to set up a manual recording for this weeks new episodes (or last weeks, if those are the ones you missed).

Many of us are having channel loss problems with 9.1, but didn't have them with 8.3. 8.3 was a pretty solid release. Sorry to hear that you're having problems.

The OP on this thread had the same problem (channel/cable) and ended up with TiVo replacing his box.
Interesting.

It's painful getting another one due to the need to setup the cable cards again. My first round of cable card installations took three visits. Then another recent one to fix a misbehaving cable card. Now, if the box does not fix itself, yet another potential cable card installation visit. *sigh*

It's sad such an aswesome system (once it works,) turns out to be the most painful piece of equipment I have ever owned.

My S2 worked toruble free for many years and never required a visit from the cable company, or had any other issues.

Agreed. The S1's and S2's were pretty much bullet proof. S3's/THD's can do a lot more and have more demands (and probably expectations) put on them but that also requires many more features many of which can go wrong. I don't blame TiVo for all of it...cableco's have done very little to make things better. And we won't mention the FCC.

I'm old enough to remember cars with "crank up" windows and the advent of "power windows". Ooooooo. But soon no one wanted the option of power windows because they were problematic and just another thing to go wrong. Now they're standard equipment because they eventually worked out the bugs. I suspect that we're in the same technological advancement stage with TiVo.
