Sunnyside. New NBC sitcom, Thursday nights after The Good Place, stars Kal Penn.

(wiki) Set up in New York City, the series follows Garrett Modi (Kal Penn), a former New York City councilman, who finds his calling when faced with immigrants in need of his help and in search of the American Dream.

I thought it was ok. Pilot wasn't spectacular, but few are. Large ensemble cast, so it will take some time to gel. I'm not a big Kal Penn fan, but he's decent in this. The cast has potential. Liked the running joke where Griselda had a job everywhere they went.

I'll watch another, to see if it can grow on me.

Anyone else watch?

I tried. I am not a Kal Penn fan at all, so I already went into it with a negative.
I made it 15 minutes before I just couldn't go any further. It just wasn't entertaining to me. And with all the other shows in my queue, I just couldn't add this one to the list.

I really wanted to like this one, as I've lived in Queens, I know many immigrants from all over the world and all walks of life, and I've helped some of them become citizens myself. But every character in this show was just a shallow caricature, every scene was just a simple skit, and the production values were not the highest. I watched another half-hour comedy premier this week, The Unicorn, which I expected to be even more shallow, but that one turned out to have far better writing, acting, directing, and production ...regardless of whether I liked it or not. Not sure I'll be sticking with Sunnyside.

I liked it and willing to see if if it pick-ups in the next few episodes.
Couldn't finish E2. The characters are too comic book for me. I like Griselda, but the rich siblings... waaay too over the top for me. If this is one that needs to grow on you, it missed it's chance with me.

I thought the characters were caricatures similar to the start of Community so I was willing to give it time, but with the ratings, I doubt it’ll make it too long.

Watching the episodes now, and am in the middle of the second. It seems like actors who are capable of so much more stuck in the middle of broadcast TV sitcom mediocrity +.

I liked Kal's character his sister, and the new councilwoman, but the show revolves around the characters I don't like.
Didn't make it to E2

I forced myself to watch the first two episodes, but allowed myself to fast-forward past scenes for many reasons. I'm not giving it a third chance.

I usually give new series four episodes to land me.
I may not make it to four with Sunnyside.

I watched the first couple. The rich siblings are just so cartoonishly over the top. How are they even associating with this random group of down-on-their-luck immigrants? Why aren't they just paying a high-priced immigration attorney to help them?

Maybe there's a role there for Lori Loughlin's fixer. ;)

I went back and gave E2 a fair chance, watched the full episode. Still not my kinda sitcom. I like Griselda (Imelda? :D) and Hakim, but the rest do nothing for me. I've never been a Kal Penn fan, but wanted to give this a try. Nothing's changed, still not a KP fan.

It reminds me of Taxi, without the writing.

And it's gone. One more episode on tv this week and then the rest go to the NBC app, one per week. They didn't stop production and actually ordered one extra episode so it may have a conclusion if that matters for a sitcom.

It does if they decide to enter it as a "limited series" instead of a comedy series for Emmy consideration.
Glad I never felt invested in the show . . . .

Not surprised. Never came together, poorly cast, writing sucked. But other than that...

I lost my bet with myself. I had "Carol's Second Act" as the first to be cancelled.

I stopped watching after the first episode. I recorded them all, just couldn't bring myself to press play. Too shallow. Painfully so.

I'm not sure why you guys kept thinking CSA would be cancelled before Sunny, since it airs in the time slot and gets higher ratings than Sunny.
