Stupid Questions #104+

I am thinking about getting a Tivo Premiere.

Currently on Directv with a R-15 DVR, and I am fed up. DVR #1 died. It developed "blank spots" where it would skip over anywhere from a few seconds to over 10 minutes of a program. DVR #2, the replacement started doing the same thing after 3 weeks. Now DVR #3 when you turn it on, it will not respond to any input from the remote control for at least 5 minutes. It is not worth paying close to $80 a month for this kind of aggravation.

I see Best Buy has the Tivo Premiere with an antenna for $99. I see that in my area OTA there are over 60 channels. All for about $60 a month less. I can save even more if Tivo runs the Antenna only promotion again. Yeah, I get it, I will never get rich living on Social Security.

So, that's where I am at. Which leaves a few questions my digging here has not found yet.

1- Is there any chance the Antenna Only promotion will be offered again? Or, does it still work?

2- If I download programming from online (Amazon, Netflix, etc) can I transfer it to my computer & burn a DVD? After all, if I paid for it I should be able to save it long term.

Netflix streams. It never sits on the TiVo HD. The Amazon stuff won't come off the TiVo. It's marked copy protected.
Antenna only promo offer does not work any longer. :(

Anyone's guess is as good as mine on if TiVo will offer it again.
Crap!

Well, it was worth a try. 10 bucks is 10 bucks.

It was 15 years or so ago that I watched OTA. Then it was analog and all problems. I hope that the digital signal now is better. At least it looks to be on TV Fool. My primary reason for the Tivo is to replace the VCR. (It don't do digital) The few cable programs I like I guess I can buy on DVD.

Like politics, all OTA reception is local, so YMMV. But overall the new digital OTA is much better than the analog from years past. Until the cable lobby gets Congress to kill it, this is a golden age for OTA TV reception.
