My Power went out at my house. When it came back on, my series 2 tivo is stuck on power up. Tried several times to unplug it and power it up but still stuck.
Any ideas?

Unfortunately, a power glitch of the sort of company a power failure often causes disk drives to fail, and the symptoms you have is that of a failed disk drive. There are many options for replacing the drive; your choice depends on how comfortable you would be replacing a disk drive in a PC. Go look in the upgrades section of the forum for detailed instructions.

When you have brought your TiVo back to life, plug it in to a UPS so that it is insulated from power glitches in the future.

The "why" is that Tivo was repairing the software.

Typically you will see a screen saying that the TiVo is trying to fix itself when this happens. You won't simply see a screen that says 'powering up"

Mine also went late Saturday night to "encountered a problem and is shutting down".....Sunday Am...stuck on Welcome. Called tivo...power cycled, was told nothing else other than asking me for a CC # so it could just be exchanged. I unplugged it and left it all day yesterday and today...will try again when I get home. Guess I will just leave it on and then see. Suggestions Stevel?

Unplug the TiVo for a minute, then plug it in again and watch the front panel of the TiVo carefully. Does one of the LEDs change briefly to yellow within the first minute after you plugged it in? If it does, then that means at least the disk drive is spending up and is responding and there might be something else you can try. If you do not see a yellow flash, or hear the disk drive spinning up, and you have a serious problem.

I am having the same problem after a power interruption. My SAT-T60 cycles from "Welcome. Powering up" to "Almost there...", then the screen flashes and it starts all over. The drive is definitely spinning (I can hear it), and the Receiving LED on the front panel does flash to yellow during startup.

So what are a few of the "something else you can try"s that might not involve opening the box?

See my post on another thread for some suggestions. If that doesn't work...as stevel pointed out...it may be a failing HDD.

In addition to the other good advice above I strongly suggest you invest in an inexpensive Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS). It doesn't have to have very much capacity - just enough to get you past those minute or less power glitches. Those are the ones that are often responsible for hard drive failures.

Saturday night I noticed that none of the lights were lit up on the front on my TIVO box and when I flipped over to it the screen was blank. I unplugged it a plugged it back in. The lights came back on on the front of the unit. Got the “powering up screen”, then the “just about there”, then a blank screen and the lights went out again. Tried it again and it would cycle between the powering up and the just about there screens….So what do you think? Hard drive or power supply?

Power supply failure is not only extremely rare, TiVo would not power up at all if it did fail. Unfortunately everything you describe points to HDD failure.

Recovery may be possible by using TiVo's diagnostic programs. If not, a call to TiVo or replacing the HDD are your other options.
