Hey everyone,

I've got a strange one for you: I am having intermittent network problems and am wondering if it's TiVo or the router or the network adapter (or even the cabling?). Here's the setup:

I have a Linksys Vonage 'g' router (WRTP54G) that connects our Mac mini and an older S2 (with USB Netgear adapter) and a new DT S2, but all are through wired connections. The old S2 cannot connect to the TiVo service anymore and does not show up on TiVo Desktop (2.3) anymore either when using a Windows XP laptop. I have verified all addresses (192.168.15.10x for each device) and there are no duplicates. When I ping the old S2 through the router, usually only 4 of the 5 packets are good (20% loss).

And now for the tricky stuff....

When I restart the DVR either by pulling power or through the menu or when it gets a new DHCP address, it works OK for about 3 minutes, then quits communicating again. When I connect the laptop directly to it, however, it works perfectly. When I plug it back into the router, the activity light blinks incessantly and it won't talk anymore.

Any thoughts?

p.s. this setup (including Desktop) has been working fine for nearly a year and stopped cold on Sept 11, 2007!

Ever try a different port on the WRTP54G?

Just for grins try assigning the DVR a static IP. Make sure it is outside the range of IPs that the Linksys uses for DHCP (usually 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.150). Also don't try to use 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.255

Personally I have found that far fewer flaky things happen if I use fixed IPs for the equipment that is very seldom or never disconnected from the network and leave DHCP for things that come and go like laptops. Besides always knowing what the IP for each piece of equipment is has come in handy more than once.

That was it! Bad port on the router!

Thanks for the basic troubleshooting advice - I should have tried this the first time! I did also assign a static IP for a reduction in flakiness.
