I posted last week regarding my TiVoHD not recording the last 2 episodes of The War on PBS and got very good answers (turns out to be pilot error) but now I'm confused about programs that still don't get recorded. In a nutshell, I canceled the season pass I had for The War, increased the number of programs to save to 10 and manually scheduled the last 2 episodes I'd missed earlier. When I checked the To Do, they were listed. I also scheduled the NASCAR race and the NFL game for Sunday night. Now, I have to assume, as these were all HD programs, that I exceeded the amount of space needed to store these programs (although I did not get a message that woul be the case when I scheduled - only that some programs woul be deleted early)
Bottom line is that the NASCAR race never even started recording, although scheduled. I tuned in an hour + late and started recording, allowing an hour extra time at the end. I watched the race to completion and deleted the recording. I believe this was about 5:30, around the time the last episode of The War was scheduled to record. Anyway, at 8:00 PM I began watching the Bears/Packers game which was recording and finished watching it this morning. I deleted it and looked to see if I had the last episode of The War and it is not found. Looking in the Recording messages, no mention is made of it. Wha Hoppen?
The bottom line is that I need to add HDD space, but I'm disappointed that TiVo has apparently spent too much time programming added features and missed taking care of basic needs, like simply informing the user that there won't be enough space to record the program being scheduled. It seems like feature creep is defeating dependable basic use of the machine. For example, a while back, I wanted to record a presidentail address which did not appear on the guide. I scheduled the programs in that time slot and, sure enough, the TiVo happily recorded those programs in the time slot they were shifted to rather than the speech. Call me old fashioned (or pour me one).

Oh, I recorded both the #6 and #7 episodes of The War on DVD using my Panasonic DMR-EZ27 from HD OTA, so nothing lost on that count :)

Well, it seems the problem is you are setting everything to "keep until I delete". No matter how big your hard drive is, you will have serious issues if you use this setting for a lot of programs. Btw, if you check your To-Do list recording history, it will tell you these things before hand.

I don't have the default set to save until I delete. I have saved 5 episodes of The War, so I assume the HDD is nearly full.
The issue is it's a PITA to have to go through these hoops just to discover whether a program will be recorded. If there isn't room and the TiVo can't delete recordings, it should just tell you that when you schedule, rather than giving a nebulous statement like "Recording xxx will be deleted early" and then not recording the scheduled program. And why isn't anything in the recorded messages about the ones that were scheduled and didn't record? It tells me that "Someone had deleted a scheduled recording" and that's good to know but when it screws up itself, it doesn't mention it at all. I work with a few people like that :)
And while I'm ranting, How about if you have a season pass for a show and you schedule a show with extra time at the end so it conflicts and you say OK, don't record the season pass show. Then, let's say you watch the show delayed and it finishes on time, so you stop recording and delete the program. Now the season pass program could record but once it's gone, it stays gone and I have to reschedule it. As I said, if TiVo didn't try to do so many "smart" things, it could do the basic things a lot better.
And worse, the Packers lost.

As rainwater says, your best friend is checking the To Do List recording history. It's a wealth of information.

And, oh, by the way, you get no sympathy from me on the Packers loss. I'm a long suffering Bears fan!

That's my point - there is NOTHING in the history about the missing last episode of The War or the missing NASCAR race. It tells me about programs I scheduled and canceled but not a comment at all about the programs the TiVo just decided to not record.
And those darn Bears - they really came to life in the second half (which I watched at 5:00 AM this morning). I went to bed last night thinking we'd taken it to 5.

Hmm...I'm puzzled as to why there would be no information about shows you scheduled but were not recorded. It normally has some kind of explanation.

If it's any consolation, we quit watching after the first five minutes of the game and watched a movie. When it was over, I decided to flip on NBC just to see how bad it had gotten, and within 30 seconds, Favre was intercepted by Urlacher. We certainly turned it on at the right time (at least for us!).

I was just reading some other threads and saw this - http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=369057 - which might explain the problem IF I got 9.1 (haven't checked and I'm at work now).

Now all I need is to get my Comcast bill and find out they're back to charging me $17.90 for the two CCs as they did a few months ago when I had the S3 and I'll be looking for a clifff to jump off.

Thus far, my TivoHD only has five episodes, with keep 10 set.

My Tivo shows episode #6 (When Things Get Tough) this week and #7 (A Deadly Calling) next week. Those episodes did not show up on my Tivo's guide data last week.

The online schedule @ PBS.com for my affiliate indicates this is correct.

That's interesting. From the guide for my local PBS station:
The War

A World Without War (March 1945-September 1945)

Sunday, October 7, 5:30pm

CHANNEL 42 (WXEL)

* View more broadcast times

Visit the Web site

The final months of World War II are chronicled, including the death of President Roosevelt; the discovery of Nazi concentration camps by U.S. and British troops; and the Germans' surrender on May 8, 1945. In the Pacific, however, the war drags on.

CC, Stereo TV14

And this is the episode that wasn't recorded nor does it appear anywhere now - although yesterday afternoon it was in the To Do list along with episode 6 which immediately preceded it and WAS recorded.
Strange Days.

Oh, and one of us has the episodes wrong - I think it's not me. http://www.rep-am.com/slideshows/kenburns/episodeguide.html

You're completely right. I was completely wrong.

Episode #6 is "The Ghost Front" and #7 is "A World Without War."

I found another schedule for my local affiliate. Episode #6 was shown Monday, October 1 and #7 was shown Tuesday, October 2. Both were repeated yesterday. My TivoHD recorded neither. Moreover, neither episode was listed in my program guide yesterday.

Now episode #6 isn't showing again until November 7. :(

My experience also but I discovered, with the kind help of others on this forum, that I hadn't allowed more than 5 episodes and I'd manually set the 5 I already recorded to Save until I delete. Nothing I can figure out explains the missing episodes I scheduled after I set the number saved to 10 - unless it was lack of HDD space or this bug that seems to have surfaced regarding CC#2 (as I was recording HD on both tuners)
Regardless, the TiVo is a big step above the SA 8300 HD it replaced, and hopefuly I or TiVo will resolve the outstanding problems.

I had my War season pass set to keep 10 from the moment I created it.

Tivo's guide data for the last two episodes on my PBS affiliate (WETA) was evidently wrong. That's the only explanation I can see. This is the first time that has happened since I got the TivoHD in late July. The >99% reliability isn't perfect, but it's far, far superior to the FiOS' Motorola DVR, which has missed (or did not fully record) about a dozen recordings in the past month.

I'm having some unexplained issues as well.

For example, tonight I am watching the Buffalo/Dallas game while taping Journyeman. At 10pm, when Journeyman ends and the Daily Show begins, I was prompted to change the channel to start recording the Daily Show.

I have no padding on Journeyman, and the show ended at 10pm.

Similarly, I have no early start on Daily Show, and it begins at 10pm.

These are the only two shows recording tonight.

Why am I being asked if I want to change the channel to start recording? Why isn't TiVo just switching the unused tuner to Daily Show?

Seems like some sort of scheduling code is wonky, if you ask me...
