Startup Questions for my Tivo HD

- I have set the name of my DVR at the Tivo site, but it won't download to my DVR. (It just says "set the name of this DVR at tivo".) (The post engine won't let me post with it spelled correctly.) Any idea what I can do?

- I published a directory with several mp3 files using the Tivo Desktop software, but it says "no usable content" when trying to listen to that on my Tivo HD. Why is that? The manual claims mp3 support. Is this a problem with the Tivo HD that will be fixed?

- What exactly is the advantage and implications of enabling "Home Network Applications"? It has a warning that "personal information will be vulnerable", but I cannot find out exactly what that information is, nor can I find why I might want to enable this feature. Can someone clarify this?

- This is probably covered somewhere, but is there anything similar to the "jump ahead 30 seconds" feature I so much loved on my Dish DVR remotes?

I just purchased and activated 2 Tivo HDs (one from here) and I am pleased with the overall features, but I appear to have a lot to learn.

First I would like to welcome you to TiVo and the TiVo Community.

From what I can tell there is a bug with the TiVo HD and not actually accepting the name you give it on TiVo's website. I assume they will eventually fix that.

I can't help you on the TiVo Desktop front because I use a Mac and it just shares my entire iTunes library (besides DRM tracks) with my TiVos.

The Home Network Applications are application servers that you can run on your computer and your TiVo will be able to use them. I have never done it nor see the need.

You can make the advance button (the one that looks like this: ->| and is under the fast forward button) do a 30 second skip. You need to be playing a recorded program and while it is playing press these buttons in succession: Play, Select, Play, 3, 0, Play. Your TiVo should give you three bings the acknowledge that it accepted the code and then you will have a 30 second skip.

Do you correctly play mp3s in your iTunes folder, or are all yours "purchased" music?

Would entering 2-5 instead allow for a 25 second skip? I like the 30 second skip in general, but a 25 second skip might work better in football games.

I did have another question:

- How can I find out the code for my Emerson flat-screen TV? I tried all the codes on the screen and none worked. The HD Vizio I got was setup right away, but this one is not registering. I got it at Wal-Mart several months ago and it is not an HD unit, though I think it is widescreen. It says "EWL20S5 B" on the back.

I found one thread from last year here, but it never got an answer. The TV has worked great for me, I just want to not have to use the TV remote.

I can't find the 0999 code documented in the manual, but I will dig around a bit for that.

I do play mp3s just fine. It doesn't even show my purchased music.

I believe that the code will only allow for 30 second skip. It is a backdoor code that TiVo put in place as to not advertise it but still allow people to use it.

Finding the codes for TVs can be the hardest thing in the world. My best suggestion is to do a google search for the tv make and tivo remote and see what turns up. Sorry you are having trouble.

I found the power/volume code using the 0999 code (from the Tivo website) quickly. The TV input was a bit harder, so I will come back to that later since I won't be changing it nearly as much.

Rats.

It looks like they disabled that. It just "bongs" at me when I try to enter the numbers.

Try it again, only this time do it while you are watching a recorded show, not during live tv.

S-P-S-30-P does indeed make a "bad bong" in the sequence, then you hear the "bing bing bing" at the end saying it was successful, a bad bong doesn't mean it failed, listen for the "bing bing bing" instead.

I get the "bad bongs" but I never get any "good bings" and the button still jumps to the end. I am using the remote that came with the Tivo HD, which could be different.

I appologize because as some of the others have pointed out I gave you the wrong code. I accidentally swaped Play with Select. The code should go as follows: Select, Play, Select, 3, 0, Select. Try that and it should work.

Excellent Ben! That works exactly right. It does give the "bongs" when entering the numbers, but it gives the 3 dings at the end and I know have my 30 second skip again.

One controller keeps forgetting this change. Any idea what is happening? I will hit the "jump 30 seconds" button and end up going to the end or beginning of the show instead (its original use). I can reset it, but why did it "forget" its status? I haven't changed the batteries and I have only had the unit a week or so.

Brad,
The 30-second skip feature is a software feature on the TiVo itself, not the remote. So the TiVo should not lose that programing unless it gets rebooted or the code is entered again. So it sounds like you are having random reboots. I don't know what to tell you about that. Sorry.

IIRC, if it's a brand new unit, it's possible that the Tivo youv'e had "for only a week or so" got a major software update and automatically rebooted itself, you've had a power outage that caused the reboot, or it's suffering the random reboot syndrome.

I hope it's not the latter.

I have caught both my units in a reboot while using them once each. I will keep an eye open for the "random reboot" problem.

there are protected mp3s (ones you buy online) and mp3s that are not protected (ones you rip from your own cds and the software that does it is set to not protect the resulting files). the ones that don't play are protected.

None of these are protected. All are ripped from my own CDs....

i'm not trying to argue with you, but in the software i first used to rip my cds (i don't remember what it was) the default was to protect. to have it create non protected files (you can't see any difference) the protection switch had to be set to off.

I will look and see. That is a good point and it would be a real pain to re-rip everything.
