I liked it.

Book's ship was down to 10% and then went on a zillion more runs. And in all that time, no one has thought to amplify their empathticity? Yeah, I made that word up. But still.

Did anyone recognize where the place where they said The Burn started?

And congrats for the World Record of Most "They" Pronouns Used in One Minute.
That was a bit of a clumsy interjection of personal politics into the script...

I mean, I admire what they were trying to do. But it could have been done a WHOLE lot more organically, instead of practically having the actors turn to the screen and give the audience a lecture on non-binary pronouns.

You're trying to make sense of a Star Trek eternal trope?

Whenever the "chips" are down, and the heroes are out of luck (or in this case power), that's when the technology in Star Trek taps into the eternal vacuum and collects energy that would not normally be available.

I mean, if you're going to question how with 10% shields they kept fighting, why don't you question HOW a small ship like Book's was able to defeat the shields of a much larger ship?

And no, the Andorian did not provide any meaningful input on how to fight the bigger ship.

It's all Star Trek "GOD" technology to me.... ;)

I was tainted by "thermal exhaust ports" at a young age. ;)

Hey..either you accept the entire suspension of disbelief or you don't. I find I enjoy things more by just going with the flow. I mean if you're going to accept the SPORE DRIVE you're gonna go with anything. We haven't gotten a good look at the DETACHED NACELLES yet either.

I think the reason they did it that way is that's how these conversations go in real life. I've had them, I know a surprising number of people who came out as transgender, and who want to use these foreign pronouns. On the show, it went the way they imagine the conversation would have gone.

I only have one beef about they/them in this context: it's improper grammar that's been established for a very, very long time. They really need new pronouns, because every time I see an article with their preferred pronouns, my grammar sense starts tingling and drives me up the wall.

This article about Eliott Page for example. It just warps my brain. Elliot Page, 'Juno' star, shares transgender identity - CNN

But that's MY problem, not theirs, and I try to be as respectful as I can. And they understand I'm going to slip on occasion.

Some poor acting in this episode. Found myself easily distracted while watching which is NOT a good sign. I hope this is not a trend.

My only issue with the pronoun conversations is that it's even an issue that day in the future. The conversation should have gone like this:

- My pronouns are they/them.
- Understood. Thanks for letting me know.

That they felt they had to hide that and only tell people they trust is repugnant. Even though everything has give to **** in this timeline, I'd like to think that basic human decency would be around.

But it wasn't about the 23rd century or the 32nd century. It was clearly about the 21st century (the writers were talking to us, not the characters to each other). And that's what bugged me about the scene. It yanked me right out of the story.

Star Trek has been tackling current social issues like that since TOS.

If they played this after the scene, it would have been okay.

We have seen them (briefly)... it's just what you'd expect: a gap of space where you don't expect to see one. :) I'm DEFINITELY taking that one on faith. :) And I'm sure it's a plot point down the road (like the detachable saucer section in TNG).

"Let That Be Your Last Battlefield". Loki and Bellok. Black and White on different sides. Fantastic. Frank Gorshen. All of this off the top of my head. I wish my ST knowledge could earn me lots of money. Or credits.
Yep. This is also an example of Star Trek addressing at the time socially controversial issues in a direct and indirect way.

The words spoken could also be taken as the appropriate way to address a symbiont.

Seemed organic to me. This is the first non-trill host. They were speaking from a true "they" perspective as they are all the previous trill hosts combined. It is different because they are not "normal" in terms of trill, so it is not casual. Remember, they did not admit to being a host at first and went through the trauma of societal rejection by the trill.

Just because you recognize the message being sent doesn't mean it doesn't work. Go back and look at some of the TOS lessons. They are pretty direct in many ways and Kirk does a lot of preaching to the camera.

Anyway, it made perfect sense that they wanted to be called they. And the reaction was "okay." The doubt was in the characters mind not in the societal or personal reaction.
