Not at ALL what I was expecting on the Vance/Osyraa front (though I thought it was all well-acted). I wasn't a big fan of his before this ep but I liked his acting here.

But not only do you let in a ship with an unknown status, but you let that ship in as it picks up another ship!

Then we add the scientist as fluff so we can have a morality play too!

I hope y'all liked it more than me. I didn't hate it, but it was definitely a "part 2 of 3".

Maybe partly because of how much I hated episode 11, I thought this was a good rebound and I agree the Vance/Osyraa interaction was unexpected and very entertaining.

If we can believe the holo lie detectors take on Osyrra, I'm kind of surprised he wouldn't bring this to the federation president..although I guess I'm not sure there is one and if he is actually the head, why he wouldn't even consider amnesty for peace.

The argument can be made that Osyraa's crimes are too heinous just to ignore.
(I mean look what she did to poor Ryn.)
(Fun fact: Noah Averbach-Katz is Mary Wiseman's husband.)

At any rate, Vance knew that no matter what, a partnership with Osyrra would be filled with corruption.
(Although he could have used "I have to take this to the President" as a stall tactic.)

And I agree that the scenes between Vance and Osyrra were good but the rest of the episode was meh.
Mainly because I didn't buy the set up of last week's episode.
And the rest of the episode did nothing to disabuse me of that notion.

Literally, at the 20 minute mark I'm going, "Oh my God, they're doing Star Trek: Die Hard.
Badly.
Right down to Burnham's bare feet."
(Although it's a little late for Christmas.)

Again, the writers are blowing their season finale because they couldn't do a decent set up.

(Also, why didn't anyone at HQ notice that the Viridian was only firing on Discovery at 6% power?)

I thought it was a pretty good episode.

Could someone refresh my memory. Michael was brought up on Vulcan by Spock's parents and became a "sister" to Spock. But where does her mother (who is now a warrior on Vulcan) come into the picture. [I know Vulcan is no longer called Vulcan, but I forgot what its new name is!]

Pet peeves: Most of the time when Michael speaks she is whispering and it drives me crazy. Yes sometime she speaks with fuller voice but its mostly whispering. Also, Book sometimes mumbles his words and when he does its hard to understand what he's saying.

Overall still a pretty good show and a pretty good season.

The moment the Kazon took over the ship, I knew Tom Paris would take it back in the very next episode. Wait, am I mixing up character and ship names here?? I guess I was just having another Deja Vu moment.

I wasn't a fan of this 2/3-parter. It just seems like a pointless and mostly obvious diversion from the primary storyline. Two episodes of filler.

I thought Vance turning down the possibility of peace in order to prosecute one single person for war crimes seemed a little bit naïve for a leader of his stature. The things she was committing to - ending slavery, planetary independence, scientific cooperation, would have been huge gains. Also, is Vance also the federation president as well as a Star Fleet Admiral? Because he sure seemed to be acting like the leader of civilian government, in addition to the leader of the military. He also didn't act very strategically -- he knew there was conflict onboard Discovery, yet he causes negotiations with Ossyra to end abruptly, leading to her return (along with her guards) to Discovery.

I recall that, but I wondered at the time whether the statement was false, there is no president, and The Federation is really a military dictatorship.

Maybe I'm reading too much into them just not wanting to cast and pay for another actor.

Oh, I looked it up and he's Kenneth Mitchell. I guess I'm remembering him from Jericho, which was awhile back.

Not just that, he played many heavy makeup roles on Discovery since Season 1, was a couple of Klingons. In October 2019 he revealed he had ALS and was confined to a wheelchair. They created the role for him so he could be back on the show.

I didn't remember his name but always recognize him when I see him (makeup roles excluded of course). I first remember seeing him in Odyssey 5, and then Jericho, and he would pop up on different procedurals.
