I have both the HR10-250 & HR20-700 hooked up to the same TV. Is it ok to stack the 2 DVRs on top of each other? Will there be any kind of a heating issue? I see that the HR10-250 has a fan in the back, while the HR20-700 has vents on top. So I figure I should have the HR10-250 on the bottom and the HR20-700 stacked right on top of it so the HR20's vents are clear. Is this ok?

Also, I've had the HR10-250 for a few years now and have never turned it off, unless it needed to be reset. The HR20-700 has an actual "off" button on the remote. Should it ever be turned off? Should it be turned off regularly? And will recordings and software updates go through as scheduled if I turn it off?

I think you would most likely run into heat issues with one of them.

Although, the HR10 does not have any venting on the top of the unit, the HR20 does, you might get away with running the HR20 on top of the HR10. Just have to make sure you have planty of ventilation.

The HR20 'off' button is just like putting the HR10 into standby. The harddrive is constantly running.

Hell, I've had two HR20's AND an HR10 stacked on top of one another... inside a glass TV cabinet. Been there since April. I've never had an issue.

Not saying it's the smartest thing.. but hey, I don't have anywhere else to put 'em.. and I have a maintenance agreement.

Really, I haven't had an issue with them.

I started off with my HR20 under the HR10-250... no problems with either for the 5ish months that I had that configuration.

The HR20-700 sits underneath an HR20-100 now, with an eSATA solution on top of that...

All inside a closed cabinet (with appropriate airflow in the back and top, with no issues.

Why can't you answer the simplest of questions without weaving your commercial into the answer? We get it: you love DirecTV, you've moved on from Tivo. Gone on your way.

I stack HR10-250s. I use four rubber "crutch" feet underneath, slipped over the existing stubby legs, to create some air space. The HR20, as I recall, has the same kind of short legs in the corner. The HR20 should be on top because of the vents.

In the transiton seasons when I have the air conditioning turned off and it's likely room temp. will creep up over 70, I keep fans running over all my hard-drive using devices. Between the Tivos and other related gear, I have about 40 hard drives running in my home network room, and heat is the enemy.

So not only have I stacked the exact configuration that the user is asking about:
HR10-250 and HR20-700...

I have also stacked another set of 2 DVR's on top of one another (two HR20's)... which was another question asked.

And let alone, I have now added another heat source on top of that...

So... WTF is the "commercial into the answer"...
So please get over the hatred you have towards me... and stop reading into everything I post as some sort of TiVo slam and praise DirecTV.

No, it wasn't. The question was about stacking the HR20 and the HR10.

I knew before I even read your answer that you would somehow weave into it that you moved away from the Tivo HR10 to the DirecTV HR20, and you did not disappoint.

As far as any personal feeling, you are mistaken. I have none. If anything, a vestige of fondness from the old days when you were a "Tivo Junkie" and a valuable asset to the Tivo community.

You are a relentless advocate for DirecTV, but more importantly you now work here to the detriment of Tivo. Don't get upset when I point that out, which I will continue to do as long as this is the Tivo Community Forum. If I came over to your DirecTV forum continually advcocating Tivo and criticising DirecTV, I would think it fair for you to do the same.

I got three new HR-20 and initially stacked them even used spacers to add a little room between them - two overheated and crashed. They were very very hot to touch.

I now have three of them sitting on their own shelves.

So no, I would not stack them but apparently other have had better luck.

My Hr20 is over my Hr10-250, only because of the vents.
The HR10-250 RULES over the HR20 only because of TIVO!!
I have no heat problems at all. Good luck with yours!

the cedar blocks look better though. I guess walmart etc would have them. i think you are supposed to put them in your sock drawer to keep moths away or something

That is cool, would have never thought to use those to keep the equipment cooled down.

My set up is from top to bottom:

Replacement Scientific Atlanta HD DVR
HR20-100
HR10-250
Defective Scientifc Atlatna HD DVR

Sad thing is I just realized the other night in addition to my standard DirecTv/Tivo upstairs and the standard Scientific Atlanta DVR I have in the spare bedroom that I can record 10 seperate programs at once.
