I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Every once and a while (like every two or three days, I'll turn on my system and there will be no sound from recorded programs OR live TV. The Tivo's menus have all their trademark bleeps and boops, but if I try to play any recorded programs or watch live TV, there is no audio whatsoever. If I try streaming music from my desktop PC it works fine.

Last night, when I sat down to watch a show, it was the same basic problem, but I seemed to be getting a split second of audio when I started playing something, then it was the same old story.

Any ideas? There's a chance that this might not be Tivo's fault. We might be having electrical problems in our house, so that might be doing funky things to the machine, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem.

Thanks!

Sorry, that is indeed useful information.

It's hooked up via optical to my receiver.

However, it is also hooked up via HDMI to my TV (because my receiver doesn't have HDMI - that's my next upgrade), and my TV volume is just at zero. Is it possible that the Tivo might be confused as to which port to send the audio over? It worked for a month or two before that started happening, though. The next time it happens I'll bump up the TV volume and see if it's happening there too.

I'm experiencing something similar. I have an S3 connected to my TV with HDMI as well as optical out to my reciever. Sometimes we watch with the TV speakers. Sometimes we turn the TV volume all the way down and listen with the reciever. The S3 analog RCA and composite video outputs are also hooked to a Slingbox.

My wife has reported that twice she has turned on the TV and video is fine but there is no audio via TV speakers (HDMI). If I remember correctly, she checked and there was no audio using the receiver (optical) either. I did not check the Slingbox audio...

In any event, rebooting the box (actually pulling power and reinserting power) caused the problem to go away.

If it happens again, I'll confirm whether the problem affects optical and analog audio.

Have either of you received the new 9.1 software release which seems to have corrected some audio problems?

This actually seems to have CREATED some audio problems for me! But rather than "no audio" I instead experience tiny dropouts i.e. a half-second or less, maybe a dozen times over the course of an hourlong program. I did not have any audio dropouts whatsoever prior to the 9.1 update.

I listen to the Optical Out thru my DD receiver, and have an HDMI to DVI converter going to DVI-in on my HDTV set (can't say for certain that the dropouts are on the analogs also, but I think not). Maybe there is something to the theory about Optical and HDMI not playing well together? :(

Well, I'm still on 9.1 and the "tiny dropouts" have gone away. Dunno if the problem was signal strength or a flakey optical cable or ...? but apparently it is not a 9.1 problem after all.

Did you ever try this? Results? I'd also connect an analog cable to the TV and see if you get dropouts there also i.e. try to isolate the problem to the optical.

I also use optical-out, and it's thru a switcher that converts to coaxial-out to my amp, so I had a couple opptys for cabling/switching problems. I re-plugged everything but never did test to see if the analogs had the problem--I guess it just wasn't annoying enough for me to do this.

I did try it, and the problem was still there. Actually, with the optical connection to my receiver, I don't get the Tivo sounds while watching a program, but I do over HDMI. So when I turned the TV volume up, I was getting the Tivo sounds, but nothing from the recording. This is definitely a Tivo issue I think...
