...(the original series, of course). And I guess it has been a while since I watched them, as I'm noticing things I had practically forgotten.

Today's episode was "Balance of Terror." (I was watching my DVDs, actually, and that was the episode I picked.)

First off, why did the Romulans have so much apparently unsecured crap above their command bridge -- just so it could fall on the crew whenever they got hit by a phaser blast?!?

Second, who designed the lighting on starships so that it would cast a spotlight on the captain's eyes but nobody else's?

Third, is it me, or was Captain Kirk a bit too friendly with Yeoman Rand when they were about to get hit by that Romulan plasma weapon?!? :D

Fourth, can you imagine what thoughts ran through Spock's mind when he first saw the Romulans and not only realized that they looked just like Vulcans, but also that the Romulan commander looked exactly like his own dad? :p

Just had to share.

Every time I watch the show, I get annoyed that whenever they get in a battle or even crash into a planet for gods sake, no one is strapped into their seats and people go flying everywhere!!

This is the case with every Trek show

In "Balance of Terror," the thing that Captain Kirk grabs onto while awaiting the arrival of the plasma weapon is Yeoman Rand. Yeah, that'll keep you safe. :D

Tonight I'm watching "A Taste of Armageddon." My big question so far is why the heck did all the security personnel on this planet buy their headgear at Stupid Hats R Us? ;)

edit: Oh, and best line so far:

SPOCK: Sir, there is a multi-legged creature crawling on your shoulder.

:D

Captain Kirk wasn't grabbing her for, ahem, safety. Rand was doing Yeoman's work. ;)

Bridge Rule #6 - when danger's around and no one with a pointy hat is near, grab Yeoman Rand. (there are worse rules :) )

If I was on the Enterprise, about to be hit by a plasma weapon I would grab on to Yeoman Rand also. Alas, such opportunities are few and far between. :)

Apparently the writers thought that Vulcan "logic" means giving useless superfluous information.

Now, had there been a uni-legged creature crawling up his shoulder, that would have been a sufficiently rare and unusual point of detail to merit mentioning!

I love watching the revamped versions of the old episodes on my 50" screen. It was never so glaringly obvious when they would switch to stunt doubles in fight scenes, at least it never was to me.
I love that too. What was the average TV screen in the 60s, 19 inch?

Even on my 32" standard-definition TV, it's pretty obvious -- e.g., in the transporter room fight scene between Kirk and Spock in "This Side of Paradise," they switch to stunt doubles for a while.

Back when I was first watching Star Trek (when it was in reruns in the 1970s), I considered myself lucky if I could use the ~20" color console TV in the living room instead of being stuck using the ~10" black-and-white TV in the kitchen. Who got control of the color TV was a big source of conflict between my brothers and me.

I think I recall reading somewhere that the reason why the Starfleet uniforms were such simple primary colors was so that they would show up well on black-and-white TVs, since so many people still watched B&W sets.

I was watching this episode and wondering who the other guy was getting in on the fight. Couldn't they get someone that looked a little like Shatner?
