Just curious I've got a series 1 Tivo with Lifetime.(registered in 2001) I'm using cable and I was waiting for this life transfer offer to come around. Besides the cost any reason why I wouldn't jump? (I mean my old Tivo could break anytime and only records one channel at a time and isn't HD so I'm pretty much ready to switch.)
So any reason not to jump on that lifetime offer?

I feel the same way as you. Looking for reasons NOT to do this deal other than costs. $500 is just the start of the costs. Additional costs may or may not include cable cards (w/ possible service visit charge for delivery), HDMI cables, wireless card for broadband to name a few.
My guess is that the day after this deal expires, they will drop the price of the HD box down in time for the XMAS sales to $99 or less (via rebate perhaps). They need to compete with the cable companies witch do not have upfront costs for the equipment and make the revenue off of the month charges.
Additionally, I do not think this with be the last lifetime transfer deal they offer. eventually they will have more transfer opportunities....no guaranties, just a prediction.

The TivoHD should be able to record regular analog cable like your S1, with the added ability to tune ATSC antenna Hi-Def channels or use CableCARDS if you want to go that route. With broadband access, the newer features are kinda nice, like Yahoo Weather, Traffic updates, Amazon Unbox (when it works), and Swivel Search.
The only couple of drawbacks I could see are:
(1) the lack of video-inputs on the TivoHD, and no IR blaster. Meaning that you can't hook it into a satellite receiver or other setup if you ever decide to leave the cable company.
(2) The "transfer" offer involves enrolling your old TiVo unit into a recurring billing plan, so you have to be darn sure to call in and specifically cancel your old box before the "free year" is up.
If your S1 is getting that old, it might be time to put it out to pasture.

We'll shutdown the S1 for good, no use for 3 machines in our household..

With that old of a Series 1 (or any of the eligible Lifetimed TiVos for that matter), I'd jump for it, even if to resell the box not too far off, if your situation changes to where a TiVoHD would be useless.

Seriously though, already ordered it. (I forgot that another advantage for me is it takes care of a channel change issue with my cable box. I've got one of those boxes that will miss a channel change if the change happens at the same time I'm using the Tivo remote.)

The MSD agreement has changed such that you only can get the MSD on a new subscription. So, when your free year is up, you cancel the service on the S1, then activate it under a new service plan (complete with commitment). I presume the thought process is that Tivo is trying to drive as many subscriptions into a commitment as possible.JonHB said:

I guess one consideration is that with the TivoHD and Cablecard, you will lose access to any interactive features your cable company provides when you are using their cable box. In our case with Comcast, that means no Pay-per-view or Movies-on-Demand. (We currently use the Comcast box with our Tivo Series 2 and occasionally do enjoy the PPV features.)dave_d said:

Plan to purchase at Amazon, then get the cablecard things resolved, THEN call Tivo to switch over the my S2 lifetime to HDTivo.
Does that work or do i need to activate the HDTivo first before being able to set up the Cablecard? Just trying to make sure that with the no returns policy that I don't get screwed.
