Just curious I've got a series 1 Tivo with Lifetime.(registered in 2001) I'm using cable and I was waiting for this life transfer offer to come around. Besides the cost any reason why I wouldn't jump? (I mean my old Tivo could break anytime and only records one channel at a time and isn't HD so I'm pretty much ready to switch.)

I feel the same way as you. Looking for reasons NOT to do this deal other than costs. $500 is just the start of the costs. Additional costs may or may not include cable cards (w/ possible service visit charge for delivery), HDMI cables, wireless card for broadband to name a few.

My guess is that the day after this deal expires, they will drop the price of the HD box down in time for the XMAS sales to $99 or less (via rebate perhaps). They need to compete with the cable companies witch do not have upfront costs for the equipment and make the revenue off of the month charges.

Additionally, I do not think this with be the last lifetime transfer deal they offer. eventually they will have more transfer opportunities....no guaranties, just a prediction.

The TivoHD should be able to record regular analog cable like your S1, with the added ability to tune ATSC antenna Hi-Def channels or use CableCARDS if you want to go that route. With broadband access, the newer features are kinda nice, like Yahoo Weather, Traffic updates, Amazon Unbox (when it works), and Swivel Search.

The only couple of drawbacks I could see are:
(1) the lack of video-inputs on the TivoHD, and no IR blaster. Meaning that you can't hook it into a satellite receiver or other setup if you ever decide to leave the cable company.
(2) The "transfer" offer involves enrolling your old TiVo unit into a recurring billing plan, so you have to be darn sure to call in and specifically cancel your old box before the "free year" is up.

If your S1 is getting that old, it might be time to put it out to pasture.

That's the only drawback to me, now that TTG/MRV is announced with a pretty firm target date.

Then again, the older unit could always be activated again, and hopefully still at the discount rate (since the TiVoHD would have Lifetime).

Well that is one of the major reasons I want to jump on the offer. (My Tivo is really getting long in the tooth.) Kind of surprised they pulled that stuff off the Tivo. (I think my bro would switch his over but he's got satellite.)

Oh well, guess I'll need to get a HDTV to go with it :)

This one is a no-brainer for us...

First we already have an S3 that has lifetime. My mothers old S1 modem died; as a result she got an S2. We then xferred the lifetime to our S3 in May when we got it.

We have an S1 dating back to March 3, 2001 with lifetime - 6.5 years and running!
We also just got an S2 with lifetime off of craigslist last week... paid $50!! (steal of the year!)

We only use two tivos, so we ordered the TivoHD, we'll then transfer the S1 lifetime to the TivoHD. Then we'll put the S2 on eBay, which I'll upgrade to 200+ hours with some spare drives. That should bring in about $400 or so, based on current eBay trends.

So $300 for the TivoHD, $200 lifetime xfer, $50 for the S2 = $550. Subtract out $400 from the sale of the S2, and it's costing me approx $150..

We'll shutdown the S1 for good, no use for 3 machines in our household..

With that old of a Series 1 (or any of the eligible Lifetimed TiVos for that matter), I'd jump for it, even if to resell the box not too far off, if your situation changes to where a TiVoHD would be useless.

Given what Tivo has already said about the cost of the THD box, there is NO WAY this will happen.

They need to compete with the cable companies witch do not have upfront costs for the equipment and make the revenue off of the month charges.
Yes, but Tivo can't hide or subsidize the charges. As sales volumes increase, Tivos mfg costs will decrease and I'm sure they'll pass that on.

I agree with you here, though I suspect they will be limited only to those boxes for which revenue is no longer recognized (e.g. like the current offer)

Amazon.com Tivo HD @ $245 + $199 to move service = $444 for an Tivo HD DVR with no service fees.

People already paid $299+tax+$299 for 3 years service.

Sounds like a no-brainer to me. :)

I have an S1 with lifetime that I didn't have plans for. I'm buying another THD just to move the lifetime ...

From the terms & conditions for the deal:

Offer permits the transfer of an eligible (as defined below) Product Lifetime Subscription for $199 plus applicable taxes only to a new TiVo® HD DVR purchased from www.tivo.com/HDservicetransfer between October 11, 2007 to November 8, 2007 (a "Qualifying DVR").

Those T&Cs seem to be loosely applied - there are others who have posted they had no problems with units bought from other locations.

Even if you have to buy the Tivo at $499, then consider the effective cost of the transfer to be $249 instead of $199. Still a good deal, IMO.

What about this line:

TiVo Service 30 day Money Back Guarantee does not apply to this offer. There are NO returns, refunds, or exchanges in connection with this offer except as otherwise permitted pursuant to the DVR's manufacturer warranty. This offer is not elgible for multi-service discount.

Their MSD is confusing. Can someone kindly explain what is meant by "this offer is not eligible for MSD"? Does that mean when my year is up, no matter what, I won't be able to get the $6.95 price?

Yes, the MSD portion is confusing.
Currently my Lifetime S1 is my qualifying unit to get MSD for my THD. It almost makes it sound like my new Lifetime THD wouldn't be a qualifying unit to allow MSD on my second THD. I'm sure that's not the case, but based on the way they worded it, who knows.

It's also kind of odd that you have to actually click on the link to see the full terms that exclude the 30 day guarantee, but when you add the item to your cart, it says 30 day money back guarantee all over the place.

Tivo - be a little more clear, will you?

Yes, seemed like a no-brainer to me too but I'm wrong way too much of the time on "no-brainers" :D

Seriously though, already ordered it. (I forgot that another advantage for me is it takes care of a channel change issue with my cable box. I've got one of those boxes that will miss a channel change if the change happens at the same time I'm using the Tivo remote.)

The MSD agreement has changed such that you only can get the MSD on a new subscription. So, when your free year is up, you cancel the service on the S1, then activate it under a new service plan (complete with commitment). I presume the thought process is that Tivo is trying to drive as many subscriptions into a commitment as possible.

I guess one consideration is that with the TivoHD and Cablecard, you will lose access to any interactive features your cable company provides when you are using their cable box. In our case with Comcast, that means no Pay-per-view or Movies-on-Demand. (We currently use the Comcast box with our Tivo Series 2 and occasionally do enjoy the PPV features.)

Thought anyone?

same issue with channel change problems with my S2.

I'm just going to wait a few more days to confirm that it can be purchased not at Tivo (counted 3 posters who said that they were successful while 1 said no).

Plan to purchase at Amazon, then get the cablecard things resolved, THEN call Tivo to switch over the my S2 lifetime to HDTivo.

Does that work or do i need to activate the HDTivo first before being able to set up the Cablecard? Just trying to make sure that with the no returns policy that I don't get screwed.

Also, what are you guys who do the upgrade going to do with your old box after the 1 year expires? Does it have any value on eBay without a lifetime? Mine is a Sony S3000 Series 2.

p.s. nice thread - less people *****ing about missing out on the deal...

Won't work. Must buy the unit from Tivo @ $299 in order to get the LT transfer.
False.

Just did an xfer from my 2001 S1 to the TivoHD i picked up at Circuit City today... no questions asked. All I said was my TivoHD arrived and I'd like to do the lifetime transfer. She took the two numbers, put me on hold, came back took my CC # and all was done.
