Show Status Indicator in Now Playing List

Hello, I did try to search for this but got nowhere, so sorry if this is a very obvious issue.

I recently upgraded my TivoHD to a 1TB drive and it has loads of free space. Most of my shows are set to delete when space is needed. When I look at the now playing list, shows more than a few days old get the yellow dot next to them or the yellow exclamation point indicating that they may be deleted in the next couple of days.

Is there any way to get that indicator dot to be more accurate? When I see that exclamation point I feel like I need to go mess with the delete date on shows I really want to keep even though I know there is enough space.

Unless something changed recently, the exclamation marks show up when you've used >50% of your disk capacity. In your case, you've used at least 500Gb.

Edit: This is not accurate. The exclamation marks show up after a few days, regardless of the percentage of disk space used.

Mine shows it in a couple of days regardless of disk "fullness". Some showing now with ~23gb used out of 160.

Doesn't really mean anything though. Shows aren't deleted unless space is really needed (unless my wife comes in here and decides to "clean out the old clutter")

I agree, it doesn't seem like it has anything to do with free space. It sort of stinks then that this indicator is really useless.

Perhaps at some point Tivo will change the ratio after they support eSATA drive expansion.

I have never heard of this 50% before, where did you hear about this?
However my disks are always at least 70% full since I record movies to have around.

I have understood the yellow dots to work like RoyK details with the yellow dot showing up after the keep until date passes (default keep until is two days so that is why they generally show up after two days)and the exclamation marks some period of time after that (which I forget the time period now)

I agree that a better indicator system would be more useful to me than even a Free Space Indicator. go with yellow dots like they are now but do not show an exclamation mark unless the TiVo projects the show will actually be deleted in 2 or 3 days. Of ocurse the fly in the ointment here is that TiVo can not forsee what shows will be watched and deleted soon after recording so even this type of logic is never fully accurate

I've never heard of it either, but considering that it's completely untrue, I'm not surprised that nobody else has heard of it.

Yellow dots appear 24 hours before the KU time expires which is also 24 hours after a recording starts when using the default setting. The exclamation marks appear when the 48 hour default keep until time expires. If you change the KU date to 10/16 for example, the yellow dot will not appear until 24 hours before the KU time expires which would be on 10/15 and then the exclamation mark appears at the expiration time on 10/16.

This is how it has always been.

Is there anyway to globally change the KU time so it defaults to say a week or something like that? I do understand why its there, but a bit of control over it would be nice.

I don't watch much TV during the week, so on the weekends when I go to watch TV, most everything recorded during the week shows like its may be deleted at any moment. I know this is not the case, but I don't want to have to think about it.

This is how it has always been.

Yep, 24 hours of no dot, 24 hours of yellow dot, then the exclamation mark. (48 hours from recorded to expired)

Unless your TiVo is running out of space and expiring shows early OR you've been manually adjusting the keep until dates.

Of course expired doesn't mean it will be deleted. I've had expired recordings stay on my TiVos for years.

I would feel more comfortable with all the yellow dots if I also had a % remaining indicator, hopefully something TiVo will add one of these days.

It is kind of annoying in that paranoid sort of way that shows may get deleted

Since upgrading the HD in our S2 a month ago, we've been recording a ton and there are currently 170 items in the recently deleted folder in the Now Playing list. I have to tell you, seeing that makes me smile and not worry about things being deleted.

I have yellow-dotted, exclamation-pointed recordings that are over a year old.

It means they *could* be deleted, not that it's imminent or likely.

If you know you have loads of free space, I wouldn't worry about it. You can keep suggestions enabled and just look to see that there are a bunch of them in the folder.

Thanks for the comments. I'm not really worried about it. Its just annoying to have this one and only indicator that is really doesn't much, when it could actually be useful.

This is a carry over from the Series One TiVos, which did not have enough recording space. Why TiVo keep this, only they can answer.

The OP may know this already, but in case someone else (e.g., a novice) doesn't, one can set up season passes (go into change recording options) so that Keep Until I Delete is set!! That way those dots will always be green!! And you won't be bothered by yellow dots or yellow exclamation points.

The default SP is for delete when space is needed, so that's why if you don't take action, you're getting those !!!!

You can also, by the way, go to your SP list and make the change now, after the fact. Go to Now Playing, then press 1 to bring up your SP list. You can then enter any SP you're interested in and change the Keep Until... setting.

The one place where it's helpful to leave the setting alone is when you are recording say a nightly news show and you want it to be replaced each time. Set the Keep at Most to 1 and leave the Keep Until setting at the make room default. It will then set aside 1 slot for that show and keep refilling it with the latest. (If you set Keep Until I Delete and have KAM at 1-- it would record 1 show and then be blocked from ever recording it again!)

Hi and thanks for the comments. I'm sure this will be helpful to some, but as you guessed I am aware of this setting. I generally dont want to set it to keep until I delete, and do want it to delete when it needs the space. The behavior is just fine, its just that the indicator has no useful information if you have more than the smallest drive.

So right now Ive got a few dozen shows that all say they may deleted at anytime, however with nearly 200 shows in my suggestions folder and maybe as many again in the deleted folder, its pretty unlikely that anything is going to be deleted anytime soon. I do understand that this feature can never be completely accurate, but having that indicator just get me close would be nice.

I know that sooner or later this thing will fill up for real and when it does, I will have long since stopped paying attention to the indicator, since it doesnt mean anything the vast majority of the time. Then of course stuff I want to save will be deleted.

That statement is incorrect. It was previously reported in the eSATA thread but I have since been informed that is not accurate.

As long as you have *anything* in the suggestions or deleted folders, nothing will be deleted, because those always go first (notable exception: keep-at-most will of course delete episodes associated with that season pass/wishllist when a new one is recorded)

If there are a few things you want to save, set only those to 'keep until I delete', or download them to your computer. Then no worries. Otherwise, just understand that TiVo isn't really intended to be a permanent saving device - its really just intended to keep a cache of recent things you like so you can watch what you want, when you want.

If you there's something you really want to keep permanently, your only options are 'KUID' or downloading it to your computer or other device. If you don't do those, understand that it *will* be deleted eventually.
