The TiVoHD is in the Series 3 family. Says so right on the box. I guess you can think of the old Series 3 as "premium" and this one as "lite".
It's been made clear that the TivoHD shares the S3 platform, and is a member of the S3 family, to me that's good enough since the title is "Series 3 HDTV DVRs"vman41 said:Since TiVo is not calling the new box a Series 3, should this forum title change to something a little more generic (e.g. cablecard capable TiVos)?
Where was this? TiVo's web page seems to explicitly distinguish "TiVo HD" from "TiVo Series3 HD" in the footnotes.dianebrat said:It's been made clear that the TivoHD shares the S3 platform, and is a member of the S3 family
So the arm of TiVo that build it think of as a Series 3, but the arm trying to market it want to distance the product from the 2.3 times more expensive model and don't mind at all if they confuse the consumer. Typical.dianebrat said:As was posted above, the TivoHD carries the Series3 logos.

And the OS pages for the TivoHD list it as "Platform Series3"
I would bet that the S3 and HD code base are essentially the same, with a few rather minor tweaks for the slightly different chipsets and display. Just as Windows NT3.51, NT4, Windows2000, XP, and Vista are evolutions of the same code base, but named differently for marketing reasons.vman41 said:So the arm of TiVo that build it think of as a Series 3, but the arm trying to market it want to distance the product from the 2.3 times more expensive model and don't mind at all if they confuse the consumer.
I don't think its confusing at all. I think Tivo is doing a good job of not trying to confuse customers that why they refer to the new unit as Tivo HD, instead of Series 3 Lite. They placed the imprint on the unit to let people know that it is part of th Series 3 family, but avoid calling it by that name as to not to confuse the consumer. And to be honest I think that the only people that care about Series 3 designation are those of us who frequent this forum.vman41 said:So the arm of TiVo that build it think of as a Series 3, but the arm trying to market it want to distance the product from the 2.3 times more expensive model and don't mind at all if they confuse the consumer. Well the Forum is called Tivo Series3 HDTV DVR's.rodalpho said:It shouldn't. This forum would be renamed, like the subject of the thread says.
Yes the Series 3 and TivoHD are built on the same platform.CharlesH said:I would bet that the S3 and HD code base are essentially the same, with a few rather minor tweaks for the slightly different chipsets and display. I don't think it really matters, or anyone really cares. If I ran the forum I'd change it to clearly cover the tivo HD, but not a big deal.wolflord11 said:so why change the name?
Changing the name to something more generic makes sense to me. For example: TiVo HD DVRswolflord11 said:Well the Forum is called Tivo Series3 HDTV DVR's.
The Series 3 and TivoHD both fall under this category. They are both Series 3 Tivos, both HDTV, so why change the name?
Might want to qualify that with 'Standalone'DCIFRTHS said:Changing the name to something more generic makes sense to me. For example: TiVo HD DVRs
Why - the bulk of the news and issues are exactly the same for the two of them. Soon enough they will both be running the same software level.megory said:And I'd prefer two fora -- one for Series 3 and one for TiVo HD. Whatever.
