Should this forum change its name?

Since TiVo is not calling the new box a Series 3, should this forum title change to something a little more generic (e.g. cablecard capable TiVos)?

The TiVoHD is in the Series 3 family. Says so right on the box. I guess you can think of the old Series 3 as "premium" and this one as "lite".

It's been made clear that the TivoHD shares the S3 platform, and is a member of the S3 family, to me that's good enough since the title is "Series 3 HDTV DVRs"

but that's just my take on it.

Where was this? TiVo's web page seems to explicitly distinguish "TiVo HD" from "TiVo Series3 HD" in the footnotes.
As was posted above, the TivoHD carries the Series3 logos.

And the OS pages for the TivoHD list it as "Platform Series3"
As opposed to the HD Direct TV units
Those are why my opinion is that this forum is the appropriate name.

I think you TiVo lite guys should go somewhere else and leave those of us with the 'real' S3 alone :D
I strongly suspect that the original S3 has reached the end of its lifetime. You won't even be able to buy one in six months. So yes, the forum should be changed to "TiVo Cable HD DMRs", or something like it.
The TivoHD still belongs to the Series 3 Family. It is designed and built along the same platform.

It would be like saying that the Series 2 Tivo's (ST and DT) should have their own Forums. Technically they are different machines, but are both built along the Series 2 Platform.

We in the Directv/Tivo Forum must share with the Series 1, 2 and 2.5 Directv/Tivos. Why should the TivoHD get their own Forum away from the Series 3.
It shouldn't. This forum would be renamed, like the subject of the thread says.

So the arm of TiVo that build it think of as a Series 3, but the arm trying to market it want to distance the product from the 2.3 times more expensive model and don't mind at all if they confuse the consumer. Typical.

I would bet that the S3 and HD code base are essentially the same, with a few rather minor tweaks for the slightly different chipsets and display. Just as Windows NT3.51, NT4, Windows2000, XP, and Vista are evolutions of the same code base, but named differently for marketing reasons.

I don't think its confusing at all. I think Tivo is doing a good job of not trying to confuse customers that why they refer to the new unit as Tivo HD, instead of Series 3 Lite. They placed the imprint on the unit to let people know that it is part of th Series 3 family, but avoid calling it by that name as to not to confuse the consumer. And to be honest I think that the only people that care about Series 3 designation are those of us who frequent this forum.
Its all comes down to marketing and TiVo wants to brand TiVoHD as the mainstream HD offering from TiVo. I'm not sure the original Series 3 will be completely discontinued, unless they can't afford to drop the price to something respectable.

Well the Forum is called Tivo Series3 HDTV DVR's.

The Series 3 and TivoHD both fall under this category. They are both Series 3 Tivos, both HDTV, so why change the name?

Yes the Series 3 and TivoHD are built on the same platform.

With Windows, the NT Series: 3.51, 4 and 2000 were all built upon the same platform, just as 95, 98 and ME were built upon the same platform.

With XP it was a Hybrid of the 2 Platforms. Vista has continued with the same Platform.

A Good example would be Windows XP. There are 2 Versions: Pro and Home. The Original Series 3 would be the Pro Version, the TivoHD the Home Version. But either way you look at it, the are both in the same Family.

I don't think it really matters, or anyone really cares. If I ran the forum I'd change it to clearly cover the tivo HD, but not a big deal.

Changing the name to something more generic makes sense to me. For example: TiVo HD DVRs

Might want to qualify that with 'Standalone'
And I'd prefer two fora -- one for Series 3 and one for TiVo HD. Whatever.

Why - the bulk of the news and issues are exactly the same for the two of them. Soon enough they will both be running the same software level.

What differences can you point to that would require two forums.

now the S3 name might confuse new customers who do not notice they hae a series 3 TiVo but once that initial bit of info is imparted it might actually help to relaize that the S3 and Tivo HD actually do have a lot in common
