The hard drive in my Roamio is about 6 years old. Over the past months I have started to get some strange behavior from my Tivo such as lockups, reboots, etc.

Can anyone tell me if a failing hard drive can lead to these types of problems? I thought that the hard drive only stored recorded programs so I wasn't sure if a failing hard drive could cause the kinds of issues I have been seeing.

I'm aware that my hard drive may be approaching the end of its useful life so I was considering replacing it. But I'd still like to know if my performance problems could be a hard drive problem also.

You haven't said the size, but I would get a used 500GB WD drive and try it. Besides the programs, it is where your buffers live, and they are allocated during Guided Setup. It could be the drive or a failing power supply. Otherwise there's not much you can fix. Have you checked your MBT is System Information? A value of about 40C is normal.

My current drive is a WD Red 2Tb. If I get a replacement drive I will get a new WD Red. The current MBT internal temperature is 43, so that seems about right.

If going to stick with Red make sure you do NOT get the model number that ends in EFAX. For the 2-6TB models. Or just go with Purple since WD screwed up the Red line.

You didn't say if you were running TE4 or not, but 'reboots' have been a recent recurring problem. Apparently due to pre-roll ads, which you can ask to have disabled.

After 6 years anything is possible. I have 1 1TB WD Green, which is no longer made, in my Roamio. It is also 6 years old.

If you have the base Roamio with the external power supply (wall wart) try changing that. Any 12 volt DC with the same plug and polarity will do as long as it's rated for at least 2000ma (2 Amps). You probably have one in a drawer somewhere. Test that first as it's cheap and easy to do and a 6 year old power supply is certainly suspect.

Yes, a hard drive can cause those problems, but so can many other things. Even a perfectly good drive can cause those problems if the data has become corrupted on it.

A failing power supply is also a prime suspect. And I even had a case this year where all the OTA channels from a specific broadcaster had an unsteady signal that started causing your exact symptoms on all four of my TiVos (I initially could not believe that it was channel content related, but eventually proved it). In that case, all of the problems stopped as soon as I blocked those 4 stations and deleted all the recorded content from them. I even replaced the drive on one box before I figured that out!

A 6 year old drive is certainly in the questionable zone - but by no means does it have to be at death's door. I have two TiVos with drives over 12 years old that are still working fine. I would suggest you start by replacing the power supply, if possible. Then run the Kickstart code to test the drive (maybe 54? I do not remember); it does a very comprehensive set of tests. If all looks good there, run a Kickstart 57 or 58 to check file integrity. Only if the problems persist after those steps would I conclude the drive needed replacement.

Just as an example, I have an old THD that had recently started rebooting at random and frequent intervals. The Kickstart drive testing ran for an entire day and found no problems, and after a relatively short Kickstart 57, that box has been totally stable again.

I am not sure if the following is the same as OP failings but I have had strange events on my Roameo Plus which is stock from original purchase 6 years ago.
My problem is that everything works fine after a soft or hard reboot but then after a half a day or two I can no longer play a recording show or a show that is buffered the half hour. I get a frozen picture, picture with no audio, audio with no picture, and no ability to control the playback of the show. I thought it was just on a couple of channels but it seems like it's pretty universal. A soft reset seems to solve the problem but a hard reset (power out) seems to last longer. I have wondered if this was a cache problem or the hard drive. Any thoughts as to whether this is the same problem or a different solution. Thank you

I recommend refreshing your KMTTG Backup of your OnePasses, Channels and Thumbs, just in case...

Maybe 'offload' any recordings that would be devastating to lose.
