Let me start over here. My other thread was too big and hard to understand. I really only have ONE question. I want to know if I'm wasting my time getting an HD sat DISH box if I'm gonna have a non-HD series 2 TIVO?

So the HD signal comes in, goes into the sat box, then output to TIVO, then from TIVO to the TV? So I'm wondering if all I'm doing is downsampling back down to SDTV since the the tv in the end is getting a signal back from the tivo. If so maybe there's a way around it. Personally... I don't care.. also it's not an option for me... if I record in HD. I'd just like to be able to watch it at least or why bother getting an HD sat box? The reason I can't get an HD TIVO is b/c it's not compatible with satellite, and I don't want to get a DTV/TIVO box.

You basically answered your question. If you can't record in HD, then what's the use?

Also, you know you posted in the DirecTV receiver with TiVo forum, right?

I tried to keep it short and simple but I guess I lost you. First of all... watching and recording are two different things. I don't care about recording in HD. So I'm wondering if I can watch ok with that setup.

And yea I know it's always about DTV here but I figure my question applies either way. I did a lot of research and DISH works better for me.

After visiting the official TIVO forums I think I figured some of this out. I could go out to my TV from the sat. box using some sorta HD means if I want to watch HD. But then I won't see what the TIVO is doing. So I have to use SD output from my TIVO to my tv. That sucks. Unless there's someway to use the tuners I have in each device to switch around when I want to watch something in HD.

But it is at least to some degree partially relevant since we're talking about how to hook a TIVO up to a sat. box and how it actually works and controls what you see on the tv.

Thanks for the link tho. That's a really good place that I didn't know about.

No, it's not relevant at all. There are Standalone TiVos and their are (were) integrated TiVos. This forum is for the integrated DirecTV units which have TiVo built in. It is not for people who have standalone units hooked up to satellite receivers, DirecTV or otherwise.

Reading the forum tag I thought it's saying two stand-alone devices? My mistake if I'm wrong. I'm reading it again and I'm still not 100% sure.

All we are saying is Directv is changing from Mpeg2 to Mpeg4 and as such there will be no HD Tivos for satellite. All HD boxes will be for Cable. If you want HD info you are in the wrong place. this forum is for Standard Definition Directv integrated Tivo's only. We may not have the knowledge to answer your questions.

I bet DiSH is doing the same thing with the digital signals. I'm sorta stuck in technological crossroads it seems. I don't want cable anymore, at least in my area it sucks. But choosing sat. has cornered me with some decisions. Those bastards. If they're DVR's were better I might go with it.

I thought I did post this in the main forum area. I should have.

ONe last comment. I realized another thing in the shower. Great place to think. No matter how it's all connected ... if I don't get an HD sat. box I won't even be able to receive HD channels. So whether my tv is getting analog input from my TIVO or not I should just get the HD sat. box and figure out how to connect it all later.
