I have DirecTV basic package with a single LNB dish and no landline phone. I did some reading to know that if its used it most likely has the latest update so i probably wont need to hook it up to a phone line, right?

I would consider adding a dual LNB to get the most out of the R10.

How hard, if possible, is it to hack the R10 to get rid of the no phone line nags? What about adding a larger hard drive.

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for the help!

P.S. I can get a used R10 for around $35 shipped. If there's something better out there that you could recommend (easier to hack or whatever) please let me know.

It's very difficult to mod an R10 - it requires desoldering the existing PROM and soldering a modified PROM chip on the board. More info here http://www.mastersav.com/tivo_zipper.html

The good news is you don't need to mod an R10 if you don't have a phone line, except for the initial activation by DirecTV. You'll get nag messages daily, but if you erase these and order PPV online, you should be OK.

Any series 2 DTivo can be hacked without a PROM mod using the Zipper or by doing it manually. Series 1 DTivos are also relatively simple to hack but lack a few features available in the series 2 models. They also require a more expensive Turbonet or cachecard for ethernet connectivity as opposed to a simple USB adapter for the S2 models.

The R10 is not a Series 1 or 2 unit. Technically it is a Series 2.5 unit.

The R10 needs a prom mod to be hacked.

My post was an addendum to the one that preceded it, hence there was no need to repeat that the R10 needed a PROM mod. I also never said that the R10 was a series 2 unit but rather that any series 1 or 2 DTivo could be hacked without a PROM mod, indicating that basically anything other than the R10 can be hacked quite easily. Clear enough for ya? :p

Yes any Series 1 or 2 unit can be modified without a Prom Mod. We all know that. BUT, the whole point of this thread was that the Op was asking about the R10 Unit. They were not asking about a Series 1 or 2 unit, but rather information about the R10.

ForrestB was answering the OP's question directly while you were playing WAY out in Left Field.

Also, any Unit after the R10 (R15, HR20) etc are not easy to hack, if you can at all.

NO !

Get a DVR40 or DVR80, that's my advice anyway. More reliable, easier to hack, etc.
Any Series 1 or Series 2 Directv unit would be suitable. Yes they are more reliable, easier to Hack etc.
