Setting up the Premier remote

I am upgrading from the old DirecTv HR-10-250 to FIOS with a Premier front-end. ( i don't speak or write French, or affectations). I like it, mostly, except for the stupid menus, which, I understand, I can revert (but will I lose my Netflix connection?).

Anyway, my old remote controls the on/off from my Samsung TV and Yamaha A/V receiver. It works with the new Premier box, just as it did in the past. When I asked Tivo for the code to do this with the new remote that came with the Premier, Tivo said that the new remote can't do it (shut down, or turn on both units with one click). How can this be?

If I bought the "teachable" remote and taught it the code in the old remote, would it turn both on/off? I am reasonably UNIX literate, though not much LINUX, can I patch it? It seems that there must be a way to store the code that is broadcasting from my old remote?

Am I missing something?

Did you follow the remote setup instruction for the new remote on the Premiere? It has options for both a TV and A/V tuner. See this link if you're not sure how to do it. http://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/294/kw/remote/session/L3NpZC8zSWpIem5vaw==

I have a Sony A/V system and had to get a Glo remote to control it, but apparently Sony uses some funky remote codes.

They're just menus.

I can control the a/v receiver, I can't turn it on/off with the new remote.

The remote setup instructions don't cover turning an a/v receiver on/off.

I have the slide remote (just setup yesterday), and I haven't tried to do this yet, but if it does I will be one happy camper...

I just bought and setup the Slide remote, and it will only turn on/off the av receiver if you use the learning command and assign a button for that purpose. I used the input button on the Slide since I have an HDMI switch and never touch the input controls on the TV.

You don't have to use a separate button. The power button on the learning remote can be programmed to power up to 3 devices at once.

SWEET!!! Are there instructions for doing this somewhere? The TiVo website is less than helpful, as well as the manual (unless I missed something).
I found the instructions here:

http://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/278

Probably seen them the whole time, but here is the "small text":

These Learning remotes can control power for up to three different devices.

To learn power for a second device, follow all of the instructions above but for Step 2, press the number 1 before pressing TV Power.
To learn power for a third device, follow all of the instructions above but for Step 2, press the number 2 before pressing TV Power.
NOTE: If you use the TiVo remote to control power for more than one device, it is possible that one or more devices may not receive the Power On signal (for example, the TV may power on but the A/V receiver may not). Pressing Power again may turn off one device as the other turns on. If this happens frequently, you may need to turn on power for one device individually, either with its own remote or by pressing the Power button on the device itself.
Now, the other issue I have is that my Yamaha RX-V663 doesn't have a power toggle (neither does my harmony remote), so I need to figure out how to make the remote toggle the power on/off.
Well, for now I have programmed the input button to power off the A/V Receiver. PITA, but I guess it works. Not exactly what I wanted to use that button for.

Are there any other buttons on the remote that the TiVo box itself doesn't use?

My Onkyo receiver works the same way with discrete buttons for on and off. But that's luckily an easy fix too.

Set the TV Power button on the TiVo remote to issue 3 commands when pressed:
1. TV Power Toggle
2. Receiver Power On
3. Receiver Power Off

If the receiver is already on, it will be powered off. If it's already off, it will powered on.

Or if your receiver and TV both support HDMI-CEC, you can use that to control the power state of the receiver and avoid having to program the remote at all.

Thanks, I will give that a try. I would have assumed that would power off the receiver, but the two commands must be issued so close together it doesn't?

Exactly. The receiver doesn't have enough time to register the off command unless it was already on.
Sadly, it didn't work that way for me, the receiver just turned off and back on. But it did give me the idea to set the TV Power button to turn the tv on, then the receiver on, and then set the receiver to the proper input. Then, since I don't need the input button anymore, I programed that to turn the receiver off. Not as elegant (one button press on, two off now), but definitely better than my previous 2+ remote system.

I never thought I would like another remote better than my harmony, but the slide is definitely growing on me.

That's too bad. You could try to reverse the order of the on and off. Not sure if that will make a difference.

Does your receiver and TV support HDMI-CEC?

I know my TV does (Panasonic TH42PZ80U), but I cannot tell if my receiver does, it is a Yamaha RX-V663, and the manual never mentions it (that I have found so far), but a google search leads me to a few threads on AVS Forum that mention that it does, but is it something I need to turn on?
is it something I need to turn on?
Yeah, it's something that would need to be turned on for the TV and the receiver. Different manufacturers have different names for it, so you might have to look around in the menus for it.
